Thoughts on Topaz DeNoise AI?

I was, curious, so I got On1 NoNoise to compare to DeNoise. Topaz is far faster, and is more flexible in terms of Denoise options. It is also much better with heavy noise. With moderate noise it appears to preserve details slightly better, but with more artifacts as you increase sharpening. It is more flexible in terms of sharpening and enhancement. Both are good, but overall my choice would be Topaz

Will it work with Windows 7?

Hmm, I hadn't heard of On1 NoNoise before. Does anyone else here prefer it to Topaz DeNoise? Do the results consistently favor one over the other? Again, I'd prefer to start down the path that most have already found most beneficial.

I bought Topaz DeNoise when it first came out and was pretty happy with it. However, I since bought the ON1 photo Raw 2022, which includes NoNoise AI. IMHO, it blows Topaz out of the water. I think noNoise is also available as a separate plug-in if you don’t want the complete software package.

Kudos billnikon for your amazing capture of that Green Heron in flight!
Simply fabulous color harmonies latent within!

And you accomplished this in a rather challenging illumination scenario!
btw, would have loved to see a download of that epic image...

Thank you so much for sharing...
All the best on your photographic journey billnikon...

I moved to the Olympus MFT system a couple of years ago and have enjoyed it overall; however, one drawback I've encountered is noise in low-light situations using higher ISO (of course). I've seen quite a few people online mention the wonders of Topaz DeNoise AI, and I'm wanting feedback from the UHH members who've actually tried it or use it. I did search the forum and saw discussion from as recent as a year ago--some liked the old DeNoise 6 better than the AI at that time (though I understand the v6 is discontinued); but has AI improved over the past year? I should mention that I do have Affinity Photo which comes with a noise filter, but I haven't been able to produce significant improvements with it (maybe due to inexperience/incompetence, haha). So does anyone here think DeNoise AI is truly amazing, or not so much?

I do realize that Topaz offers a 2-week trial, btw, but I've read where people say AI is more complicated to use than the v6, and I'm not sure at my recreational level that I'd be able to master the learning curve in time to make a good judgment in that time frame; thus I'm soliciting opinions.

Thanks!
Kevin

I was very happy with the Topaz DeNoise application till it quit working about 6 months after I bought it and Topaz was not helpful in solving it, eventually telling me I probably needed a newer computer. I then got the new On One denoise application and it runs fine. I actually like its results better than I got from Topaz. But the results could vary from camera to camera (I use an Olympus EM1 Mk3). Like any application, I’d always suggest someone test drive it before deciding.

Why not delete the program(s), go to https://www.topazlabs.com/?gclid=CjwKCAiA8bqOBhANEiwA-sIlN_GOd81NoKLzsQLa01_mKBwFplM1oAglqLop26yZNyHNktFs3nj9URoCIpAQAvD_BwE log in and download your program(s) again?

I use Topaz denoise on all my jpegs and use it as a stand alone. It does work wonders!

Thomas, that you so much for your comments.
I actually started tracking the Green Heron when he was out over the water. I was just after sunrise and the sun was mostly behind me. As he flew, I just depressed the shutter, when he came in low over the ground, I lost him in the back ground and stopped shooting. As I was going over my images for the day, there he was, standing out against a beautiful background. This has happened to me more times than I care to mention. At 20 frames per second, sometimes you don't know what you have until you go over the images when you get home. The bonus was he was also making a lot of noise coming in. I will take luck when it happens.

I think it does a better job than, say, Lightroom. However, it takes a LOT longer to do the job. So, I tend to use it only when it's critical.

I don't mean to intrude but, When I installed the last update of Topaz Denoise AI the default selection for "Allowed Memory Consumption" for the program was set to "Medium". To change this setting to "High" do the following:
1. Open the program, go to the top left, and under "File", select Preferences.
2. Go to the bottom and under "Performance" select "AI Processor" and select either "Auto, CPU" or your "Installed Graphics Card".
2. Next, while still in "Performance" select "Allowed Memory Consumption", click on it, and select "High". My program was installed with the default set at "Medium".

I hope that this helps and makes you . . .

When I loaded Topaz DeNoise AI is automatically loaded to Photoshop under my filter menu. I have had it more than a year and use it every day. It is my go to filter. It has two sliders and an automatic function. If you want more than it does automatically you can slide the noise and sharpen sliders to your liking. Now, Photoshop also has sliders for noise and sharpness but I prefer Topaz sliders.
Again, it is a tool, and like any tool it can be abused or used correctly. I do mainly wildlife photography and sometimes I have to crop extensively. That is where Topaz shines. Topaz also shows you and preview after each adjustment so you can continue to make slight adjustments until you are satisfied. It also shows you a close up box of your image that you can move around to other parts of your image to assure your adjustments do what you want.
This tool is not for everyone, but if your just out of focus or you need to crop in, this is the tool for you. In the following example of a Green Heron in flight that I took yesterday, the crop is about 1/8 of a RAW full frame image. I believe Topaz made the shot look a lot better than if I had not used it.
The decision to go to Topaz is up to you, I am glad and happy I made the move.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

I did check the settings and did a little experiment. With AI processor set to NVidia GEForce GT 720 and Allowed Memory Consumption set to High, processing time = 4 minutes. With AI processor set to CPU and Allowed Memory Consumption set to High, processing time = 25 seconds. I don't think DeNoise likes my old graphics card! Thanks for the suggestion to bump memory consumption to high - that definitely helped.

Love it, and it works well as a stand-alone, or integrated inside LR. It is a favorite of pro wildlife and sports shooters.

Here a ISO 1600 shot with my 50mp Sony A1 that was cleaned up with Topaz Denoise AI without losing any detail. A Great White Egret bends its neck to clean its feathers on the Caribbean Island of Sint Maarten/St. Martin.

Sony A1, Sony 200-600mm lens, 519mm, ISO 1600, f6.3, 1/2000 sec. First the full frame and then a tight crop from some shot.

Cheers

I use several Topaz products, but this one the most. It works extremely well 90% of the time. It is rare when it does not do the job at all. I use it as a plug in to LR and PS. It is pretty simple to use so you should do the trial to see if it is for you. For light noise, LR usually does the job, but when it goes beyond mild noise, I use the big gun, Topaz. There are plenty of discount offers out there. So do a google search to find one.
