Horn blowing
in Main Photography Discussion

I got an unexpected email today from Tamron USA. It seems I have achieved a level of "Top Ten" Tamron salesmen in the entire USA. Its hard to believe my little one man store has moved so many Tamron lenses.
Along with some gifts and accolades, the main award is an all expense paid 4 day trip to Miami this coming February. 4 days in Miami in February will be a very welcome break from these cold Montana winter days.
Our hotel will be in Miamis South Beach area and 1/2 block from the beach. One evening will be a walking photo tour of Little Havana after dinner there, followed by a 4am trip to shoot a sunrise over the Atlantic. Looking forward to it all.
Hard work does pay off sometimes! 😁😁

Manual vs Aperture Priority
in Main Photography Discussion

I'm posting this question to get you guys/gals opinion. I learned to shoot in aperture priority immediately after my first DSLR purchase and soon thereafter, learned to shoot in manual mode. I really study photography to get as much information as possible to get better. The only issue that I see in shooting manual is the time it takes to make camera adjustments that could potentially cause you to miss a shot. I do understand that aperture and shutter priority is very fast.
So, what is your opinion regarding this matter?

Advice regarding a Trip to Africa
in Main Photography Discussion

I am so lucky to have been gifted with a trip to Africa and a safari in 2019. For those who have been there, could you please advise on the following.

I have a full frame Canon 6D Mk II and a 70D crop sensor. For the full frame, my longest lens tops out at 105mm. For the crop, I have one that tops out at 250mm. Given that the 250mm on a crop is actually at lot higher than that, would you take the crop over the full frame? Or, would you save up to buy a new lens for the full frame that goes to around 400mm? Bear in mind that I can't hand hold steady anything that's too heavy.

What ever happened to Kodak
in Main Photography Discussion

Happy New Year to all of you in the UglyHedgehog country, where ever you are.

What ever happened to Kodak?

Kodak, after all, was an empire, and Kodak invented the photo chip to create digital photography.

Pictured, here is the Brownie, up to the 35mm Kodak Retina Reflex, all the way to the Kodak DCS/n (&c). I have many other Kodak’s in my collection including the fold-outs.
In Quebec Canada, cameras were referred to a Kodak, all cameras, just like Kleenex and Q-Tips.

Was it that they decided not to make Kodak Ektar lenses for the DCS, and only for Nikon and Canon lenses?

Does anyone out there know the story of why Kodak fell to bankruptcy?
What was the break point?

Sincerely

Go full frame or not??
in Main Photography Discussion

I am thinking about going full frame. I see pros and cons of each camera, but would like to see them side by side, in a concise way. But my question is this--can I use my current lenses with a full frame camera, or will I have to buy ALL NEW LENSES??? And I don't know what the "EF" and other abreviations mean. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and wisdom in advance! Happy New Year!

Which lens
in Main Photography Discussion

Ok, so the family and I are planning a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood in January sometime. I am set on bringing my D7000, my 3 batteries, and charger. However, I am not too sure as to which lens I should take in the park. I know I am not going to need my 400mm because to lug that around all day with my tripod to get a good shot will not be an option. So of my other lenses which are my Tamron AF 20-300 f/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro, Quantary 70-300 f/4-5.6, Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR, Nikkor AF-S DX 55-200 f/4-5.6 G ED, Nikkor 28mm f/3.5, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, and my Promaster Spectrum7 500mm 1:8. Before you say "why choose, take em all" I really want the day to be spent with my daughters than lugging my packed-t...

Any Mirror-Less Enthusiasts Here?
in Main Photography Discussion

Back in 2008 I purchased a Sony a300 which I liked very much. In 2013 I was ready for a replacement and purchased a Sony a58. Shortly thereafter I purchased a Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC. This lens has been on the camera 95% of the time and has given me great performance. Although it is around five years old, the a58 is in excellent condition and takes great pictures. I have babied it and it is still nice. A few months ago I decided to upgrade. Since Sony has been so good for me, I decided to purchase a Sony a6000. Sony has, again for me, hit a home run. I have also purchased Sigma 16mm f1.4, a Sigma 30mm f2.8 EX DN, and a Sony 18-135mm f3.5-6.3 lens. I am very happy with my purchase. Nice camera, nice pictures, nice feat...

Transferring Photo To/From iPhone
in Main Photography Discussion

My kids gave me a new iPhone for Christmas. I had an old Samsung/Android which I had no problems with and was very comfortable using it. In any event, I was surprised that I had to use iTunes to manage my photos and albums on the iPhone. On my Samsung once I connected via USB to my PC the phone appeared as a drive and I could copy/move/delete/create folder etc like any other drive. Very disappointing I could not do the same with the iPhone.

So, after research and I haven't' found a rock solid solution just a lot of ads for apps, including a Microsoft solution. I am willing to pay for the app, if it's not really expensive. I rather not go the route of moving photo to third party (Goggle, DropBox, etc.) and then download to the iPhon...

Found old camera - Canon EOS 40D - ???
in Main Photography Discussion

Hi

In clearing out some of my Parents older items, I came across a Canon EOS 40D, along with a 28-135 macro lens and a 70-300 IS lens. My guess is that these are at least 10 years old, maybe older, but appear to be in very good shape, and I would guess have been stored since at least 2008.

Are these worth even trying to sell, or possibly give to a friend getting into photography and wanting some equipment just to start with, or are they so old that the setup would just be frustrating?

Quick look online shows it was a good model a decade ago at 10MP, but not sure if it is worth bothering with at all now.

thanks in advance

Making a Photo CD
in Main Photography Discussion

Does anyone have a program they would recommend to use to make a photo CD? I am using Cyberlink Power 2 Go 11 and it is frustrating. One particular photo is being rotated to the right. It has put the f-stop, iso, exposure time and other info on each photo. The ability to set the duration each photo is shown is not to be found...very frustrating. I have 80 photos of an event. Any suggestion anyone has is greatly appreciated!!!!! Making a photo CD only happens once a year so an expensive program would not be justifyable.

Image Backup
in Main Photography Discussion

Having finally made the leap to DSLR 18 months ago, I’ve been procrastinating an image backup plan. I use Lightroom, and as I understand it, I need to backup the Raw and JPEG files from my hard drive, but also the Lightroom Catalogue file (the “recipes” of my post-processing work). I am interested in input from members: external hard drive vs. cloud storage, and if the latter, which service. I am an Amazon Prime member but so far can’t tell if I could backup the LRCAT folder there.

Apple?MAC duplication APPs
in Main Photography Discussion

I have some 130,000 photos on 2 seperate external 4tb HD and some on my 1tb internal HD, as I take many photos on any given day, (please save the snarkey remarks about removing them as I uplaod them). I am also an a novice PC user and extremely ignorant when it come to my IMac which I bought for the 5k screen and image viewing which at the time I was told was superior to that of the PCs and their monitors at the time of my purchase in Jan 2016. My question is this after talking with Apple care i was informed that Apple computers have no way of detecting if I have Duplicates of my photos, and that I would need to use a 3rd party app or software to locate identify and remove any duplicates. Does anyone know and have any experiance with any ...

Problem with Olympus OM-D E10 Marklll or is it the lens
in Main Photography Discussion

Devoted Nikonian - thinking of Mirrorless for travel (weight, etc). Bot an Olympus OM-D E10 Mark lll with the 14-42 EX lens. also bot a cheap used 40-150. Plan was - if happy, go to the Olympus OM-D E1 Mark ll, and keep the 10-lll as a backup. Problem --- Strong (bad) blue cast on landscapes where trees meet the sky. Looks like the blue from the sky bleeds into the treeline. Camera or lens causing the problem?? Has anyone out there seen a similar problem? Or anyone have an answer ??

Camera to Computer issues
in Main Photography Discussion

I just got a new camera for Christmas and am having issues opening photos from my new camera on to my computer (I have an Acer laptop if it matters). I went from Canon rebel t5 to a t7i. The photos are showing up in CR2 file if I remember correctly. The photos will transfer to my computer, but they are not able to open, or display. I even tried uploading them to my Adobe Photoshop Elements 14 program to see if maybe my computer was the issue, and they would not open. I had no issues uploading these photos straight from my camera to cell phone and then uploaded them to mobile lightroom cc from there. What am I doing wrong? Where did the CR2 file format come from? Any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated!

D750 won't "manual"
in Main Photography Discussion

Curious thing happened on my way to taking photos with my D750 on "Manual". None of the shutter speed settings, ISO, or aperture make any difference. The only way to change the exposure when I turn the dial to "M" is to adjust the exposure compensation. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas? Have I inadvertently locked it onto something else?

Fujifilm firmware download problem.

I have a Fuji X-T20. Great camera, however, there are firmware updates available for the camera and lenses. When I download to my MacBook Pro (downloads take several minutes) and try to open the downloads all I get is an empty “box”. Nothing there. I have a camera formatted SD card in the computer.

Any suggestions?
