A little while ago my 24-105L lens dropped from my camera bag from about knee height, onto a hardwood floor.
Seeing shards of broken glass made me initially think the issue was worse than it is; the point of contact was the edge of the lens, and the UV filter broke but the rest of the lens seems to operate fine. Problem is that the rim of the filter is bent just enough that I cannot get the ring off now, and it feels naked walking around without a filter on the lens. Is this a send-it-to-Canon thing or is there a trick for this issue? The lens has never been serviced, and is 7 years old or so; if a service is advisable anyway I may just let the service department address the bent ring issue as well. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks, Matt

Chances are, it's broken. This is a common issue with the 5D III and has been from the beginning. I've replaced hundreds of them and would be happy to repair yours as well.

I recently bought a used D5300 from B&H. I’ve bought from them several times over the past 25 years without an issue and I dont have one here. But I am curious. The shutter count read about 450 when I received it. How likely is it that that was the actual count? I bought a factory-refurbished D3400 that had a shutter count of 390. I figured it was likely reset at the factory. To my knowledge, the D5300 was not refurbished. Did I just get lucky with a low shutter count? Is it possible that the shutter count can be reset? Typical newbie question I suppose.

It takes specialized software available only at Nikon to reset the shutter count on this camera. If the camera hasn't been rebuilt by Nikon, that's the actual shutter count.

Use alcohol and a cotton swab and make sure everything is dry before reconnecting the lens. The rollers I mentioned are a common problem and usually cause the AF motor to squeal when engaged. If this starts, let me know and I'll fix it for you.

[quote=lightyear][quote=Many ( if not most) pros are members of the camera company ( Nikon, Canon, Olympus, etc) professional participants group, and use only that company's cameras. Membership gives them priority repairs, special pricing on repairs, and often use of loaners when repairs are delayed. I live in the SF Bay area ( about 8 million people) and there is no complete camera repair shop I know of. The few camera shops send their cameras directly to the factory ( Nikon, Canon, etc.) repair facilities in the USA. On my one visit to the Nikon repair facility in Los Angeles, the electronic and optical testing equipment ( not the parts) was easily worth in excess of $200,000. I was told that whenever a product was added to the Nikon line, new software and parts came in. I don't think you can compete with that.

Not entirely true. While many photographers prefer to use factory services, many still prefer to use local services as opposed to sending their money out of town.

My first business was based almost entirely on professional photographers. But then, Nikon was a reputable product and Canon had some new and inovative ideas.

I think hipsters use mirrorless.

Nope. Hipsters use phones with 5 lenses and no sense. With all those cameras, where do they put the phone?

No. What is best to use to do that. Thanks. Apparently this is a known issue with this lens.

I'm not sure what you're question is. The repair requires a complete disassembly of the lens to remove the focus motor assembly. Then you need to disassemble the AF motor assembly to remove the broken rollers. Since there are no replacement (this parts a trade secret). Now you get to put it all back together again, calibrate it and make sure it will continue to work and never have the same problem again. (That's the fun part ). I've done a lot of these.

I got into the repair business as a younger man and actually made a career out of it. But, to make a living at it you need to do about 15 repairs a week. Every week. Week after week, year after year. (I've been at this too long ...).

So may I ask you. For a CLA job how long does it take you to do it? Let say it's an old mechanical 35mm camera with little electronics like a Nikon FM or Pentax K1000 etc...

Believe it or not, I still rebuild a lot of K1000's. Many schools still teach film photography and the K1000 has been the standard for the last 30 years. The going rate for a CLA on one is about $120. It will vary from one location to another and it's really up to you as to what you charge. I offer the group on the UHH a good discount for their repairs so it varies from location to location and sometimes from camera to camera. I like flat rate pricing. One price covers a range of cameras and so on. I've been doing this for over 30 years and have had the privilege's of working in many shops across the country. It's a shame most of them have gone out of business now and the camera repairman has become an endangered species. It's a craft that takes years to learn and most independent techs spend most of their time either drumming up new business or doing actual repairs. It takes a real commitment.

This is the original VR lens and it will stop focusing intermittently. It seems to get stuck and then will work again. I have seen a post here from 2013 about it. Anyone have any info on how this can be fixed ? Thanks.

Hi. My name is Rick and I'm a repair technician. This problem is usually caused by cracked rollers in the AF motor assembly. It can be repaired but it requires making new rollers for it. I've done many of these, both Nikon and Canon and would be happy to help you with this. If you're interested, please reply by Private Message and I'll get right back to you.

I have a Tamron 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 lens and the zoom is stuck around 18mm . I wanting to get it repaired. But the Tamron Co. repair has some real bad reviews on line. Does anyone have any experience, advice, or recommendations on Tamron lens repair. Anything
would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Tamron lenses should only be repaired by Tamron themselves. They aren't that expensive and their technicians are well trained. Besides, Tamron does not sell parts which makes it almost impossible for an independent repair tech to fix their products.

What’s your opinion? Is there money to be made in this? Or are people throwing cameras away and getting new ones when they malfunction?

I think I would enjoy repairing cameras and learning exactly how they work and everything about them. But I don’t wanna waste my money on a course only to find out no one pays to have cameras repaired.

Do most professional photographers replace their shutters? Or do they just buy another camera?

I've been repairing camera equipment for over 30 years now and, while you won't get rich doing so, it does pay the bills. It's also very complicated. You need to be comfortable working with micro electronics and miniaturized mechanical parts. The initial investment in test equipment and specialized tools is steep and then there's the cost of learning how to use them. When I first got into camera repair there was a college course with a degree in photographic equipment technology as well as a National Camera course but those days are long gone and it will probably be a trial and error process to learn what you need to know. That gets expensive too.
