I have a Canon EFS 17-85mm lens that has locked up. Since it has served me so well and is a great lens, I want to send it to a reliable repair shop. Your help is appreciated.

When you send it in they will give you an estimate for repair before beginning any work. I have had lenses repaired there and have always been happy with the results.

I had the same lens "repaired" by Canon about 7 years ago. They actually replaced the lens. AT that time the charge was about $110 and I received the lens back in under two weeks.

The manufacturer's repair service might not be the cheapest but they know the product better than anyone else.

It is very likely that you can replace this lens with a very good lens from the used lens market for less money than repairing the lens.

I just noticed that B&H has this lens on sale (brand new) for $300 off of list price for a cost of $299. This would be worth considering.

EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM or is it Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM? The f/4-5.6 can be purchased used for less than it will cost to repair it.

Hi. My name is Rick. I’m the owner and lead technician at Discount Camera Repair and a member in good standing here at the UHH. I’ve been doing repairs for other members here at greatly discounted rates and would be glad to help.

I'd be more than happy to repair the lens for you and keep the cost as low as possible. If you’re interested, please respond by private message.

It is probably the well known broken ribbon cable issue that has plagued this lens for years. Depending on the cost to repair, the best option might be to replace it with the purchase a new copy of it from B&H for $299, as rcarol mentioned. Another option would be to replace it with a used copy of the superior Canon EFs 15-85. A used 15-85mm will probably cost around the same as a new 17-85mm. It's only worthwhile repairing this lens if the cost is significantly less than the other two options. That is a judgment call on your part.

Thanks to all the group for your suggestions. I tried to use Canon but they make it nearly impossible to communicate. I think I will consider just replacing the lens even though I really like it. Ray
