This is the original VR lens and it will stop focusing intermittently. It seems to get stuck and then will work again. I have seen a post here from 2013 about it. Anyone have any info on how this can be fixed ? Thanks.

You don't say which body you have. Mine has a focus lock on the back that I have bumped occasionally. It was very frustrating until I learned that trick and it's just a rare momentary holdup now. Check you're not bumping that.

Not unusual for the AF-s motors to go in those lenses. That would be a Nikon repair.
They sometimes will make noise while focusing just before they totally crap out.

Hi. My name is Rick and I'm a repair technician. This problem is usually caused by cracked rollers in the AF motor assembly. It can be repaired but it requires making new rollers for it. I've done many of these, both Nikon and Canon and would be happy to help you with this. If you're interested, please reply by Private Message and I'll get right back to you.

No. What is best to use to do that. Thanks. Apparently this is a known issue with this lens.

I'm not sure what you're question is. The repair requires a complete disassembly of the lens to remove the focus motor assembly. Then you need to disassemble the AF motor assembly to remove the broken rollers. Since there are no replacement (this parts a trade secret). Now you get to put it all back together again, calibrate it and make sure it will continue to work and never have the same problem again. (That's the fun part ). I've done a lot of these.

Hi. Thanks for your information. I was asking about cleaning the contacts as someone had mentioned that. My problem is intermittent but happens with my D750 and D500. It has been hit and miss. But it has been happening for a few months. Do you still think that it is the rollers? I am in Canada otherwise I would be glad to have you fix it. Thanks.

Use alcohol and a cotton swab and make sure everything is dry before reconnecting the lens. The rollers I mentioned are a common problem and usually cause the AF motor to squeal when engaged. If this starts, let me know and I'll fix it for you.
