Are you O.K. Losing auto focus? You will also have a very dark viewfinder.Manual focusing with a maximum aperture of f11 could be very difficult.

Generally teleconverters are meant to be used with telephoto lenses but even if you found one that worked you are still going to lose two stops of light with a 2X TC making your lens f5.6, probably too slow for indoor basketball.

I own both the 100-400 ll and the 70-200 ll. They are both heavy. Thing thing that caught my attention in your thread is that you are a 68 year old female. You might have trouble both holding these lens camera combinations steady even though they both have image stabilization and you might find it problematic to carry these around. You say that you wan’t to shoot sunrises and birds with an occasional macro. So you are talking pretty much about lenses on opposite ends of the spectrum. While the 100-400 would be good for birds and also focuses down to about three feet, it won’t give you the broad field of view that most people think of when they shoot sunrise photos. In addition, your camera body is a crop, making the field of view even closer. The 70-200 Is O.K. But with a teleconverter weighs even more and loses a little with both image quality and focusing speed. Your thread says to me that you want an L lens and you want it to do everything and to that I say there is no such L lens. If you wan’t something that does everything I would investigate some of the third party offerings from companies like Tamron and Sigma. Good luck with your choice.

He already has the 100-400 which when used with the TC gives him 160-560mm. Why would he want the Tamron.

I have the 500mm f4 as well as the 100-400 Mk ll and teleconverter. I have to admit that the 500mm f4 gets less use since I got my 100-400 with the TC. The 100-400 with a TC is 560mm and s very sharp and maneuverable but it is f8 when used this way and that can be very limiting. The 500mm is f 4 and this is a definite advantage both for light and also for those nice creamy backgrounds that you want in bird photography. The sharpness of the 500mm lenses is unrivaled and when used with a 1.4 TC you get 700mm you can get 1000mm with the 2X TC nd get good results if you are careful. There is a downside. I don’t care if you get the version one at eight and a half pound or the version 2 at seven pounds these lenses are heavy, bulky and hard to haul around so let that be part of your decision. You will also need a very good tripod and gamble head to get the most out of it. More weight to haul. Good luck on your decision.

Learn how to get the max out of what you have before going on a gear buying frenzy. The 18-200 is a very good lens. I also have the Sony-Zeiss 16-70 f4 lens and don’t notice a whole lot of difference. You can get some extra sharpness and speed from prime lenses but you said that weight is an issue and you would have to carry a bag full if primes to equal your 18-200 focal length.

I’m not sure what your issue is. These photos look very sharp ( crisp ) on my monitor. I own an a6000 and Sony 18-200 OS that I use for travel when I will be doing allot of walking and don’t want to carry allot of gear. It is a very good combination capable of very sharp photos with the only problem being barrel distortion on the wide end. This can be fixed in post. I’m not sure why Gary Fong said not to use flexible or center as these two focus modes can put your focus exactly where you want it as opposed to letting the camera guess.

Some people use microscope lenses combined with tubes and bellows. 10X is obtainable but extremely difficult with both camera and subject on a rigid platform. Stacking becomes a necessity at these magnifications. I recently saw some butterfly wings at 18X magnification.

I have the Sigma 150-600 and bought the Sigma 1401 1.4 teleconverter. Don’t count on anything that resembles normal auto-focus. The combination only works properly in very bright light and even then it is pretty slow. Anything less then bright light and you will get AF hunting or nothing at all. The difference between using that lens with a TC and cropping is almost nonexistent. I would advise against using this combination.

May I please have some help with some hints on how to get my images in better focus. These photos were taken with Canon 80D and Tamron 24-70 lens. My daughter did some posing for me. Her face is out of focus in every shot I took. I used single point focus on her eyes in every shot. Is this camera shake or am I doing something wrong?

Hard to say because I am looking at the photos on an iPad but two things come to mind. The first is that your shutter speed may be too slow. In the last photo the grass in front of your daughter seems to be sharper then the grass where she is standing which would indicate that your camera-lens is front focusing. I would do a test with a focusing target or diagonal batteries to see if this is the problem. If it is, you can either fix it yourself or if the lens is new enough Tamron will do it for you.

Funny how theses replies drift away. The OP is asking about the Canon 100-400 mark ll , not the mark one which is the one you seem to be writing about. The mark ll is a better lens then the mark 1. I am also curious about your use of the Tamron lens with teleconverter on a 5D Mk ll. Are you talking about manual focus?
