Hi Guys, I've got this lens and am thinking of getting a teleconverter to get more reach. I know you lose about two stops. If any of you who has this lens plus teleconverter, can you please let me have your thoughts with a picture or more. Thank you. Grace

Is this the Tamron 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD lens?

Since this lens is made in various different mounts, it might help to know the make/model of camera.

Meanwhile, here's a link to pros and cons of teleconverters:
https://digital-photography-school.com/the-pros-and-cons-of-using-tele-converters-extenders-on-your-dslr/

Most teleconverters double focal length. At 800 mm, the lens is going to be very dim and probably tripod-only
(even if it has vibration reduction). I haven't tried it, though.

Tamron tele-converters are compatible with only a limited number of lenses, your lens is one of them (this is only the NEW teleconverters in the current catalog).
Look here (scroll way down to the bottom for teleconverters and compatable lenses) http://www.tamron-usa.com/product/lenses/telecon.html

The 1.4x will take 1 stop of light and make your lenses a 140-560 and may or may not AF on your camera.

The 2.0x will take 2 stops of light and make the lenses a 200-800 but it will be manual focus.

I have no idea what it will do to your image quality - but the converter is made to work with the lenses on the list so the results should be good.
My Canon 100-400 with the Canon 1.4x produces excellent results.

Thanks for the link. I'm hoping somebody on UHH will have the same lens/camera combination (Nikon D7500) & is using a teleconverter. If else fail I'll see if I can rent one out.

I swear by my tc's and reflex lenses. I only comment on things that work for me. rent or borrow the lens and tc, and spend a week running them through the wringer. review you results and you'll be in a position to make a decision.

I have that lens and 1.4 TC and Nikon D500. It works great but if light is not so good it will hunt a bit more to autofocus, but results are just as good with or without TC

Are you O.K. Losing auto focus? You will also have a very dark viewfinder.Manual focusing with a maximum aperture of f11 could be very difficult.

I have the Kenko 1.4x ( https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/674566-REG/Kenko_PRO3001_4XDGXN_Teleplus_PRO_300_DG.html ) and it mates well with my Nikon D7500.
Focuses well and the EXIF data reports the extended f-ratio and FL. I have used it extensively with a variety of lenses.

There are suitable teleconverters where you can still autofocus...

Thanks Ronald. The D500 has the same sensor as the D7500. As I mostly will be using it for wildlife & birds, it would be during the daytime and hopefully plenty of light. I do know at low light it might struggle to autofocus. Glad with the Tamron teleconverter you can still autofocus. Grace

Thanks Bill. Never heard of Kenko but have just googled it and various photoshops in the UK stock them. Is it too much to ask you to PM me a photo taken at the maximum focal length? No worries if you prefer not to. I'm also presuming it will autofocus? Grace.
