Camera is Nikon D500 and compatible with Sigma 17-50 2.8 lens. Can I put Sigma APO 2x teleconverter between them without damaging camera or lens.. Thanks
Thanks, I sure do need to increase distance to 100 from 50 for DX equivalent of 150 shooting indoor basketball closeups.

Yes you CAN mount that older style 2x TC to your lens, but it is NOT recommended as it will only work from 40 to 50mm. If you zoom wider than 40mm the rear lens element will contact the TC element and damage one or both the elements.
For more reach there is never a good substitute for simply getting a longer lens.

thanks MT Shooter. First, I got Sigma 70-200 2.8 with free APO 2x teleconverter and secondly the Sigma 17-50 which was more affordable than anything in Nikon line. I was hoping the hole between 50 and 70 on my lens would not be so deep or by chance the 2x teleconverter would work !
If you shoot Nikon, buy nikon!

It's important to understand that TELEconverters are intended to be used with telephoto lenses, and a small selection of zooms. They are not intended to work with wide angle, normal, or wide angle to telephoto zoom lenses.
There is nothing wrong with using a converter with a fast tele lens - like a 200mm F2 or 300mm F2.8, and you can get great results with a 1.4 on a 70-200mm F2.8. Some lenses have dedicated converters. But not the 17-50.
And if you shoot Nikon with Nikon lenses, of course your best option is to use a Nikon TC. But if you use a Sigma lens, the best choice for a TC is Sigma, regardless of what camera it is on.
Thanks

Thanks Gene51 for ur information. I wish all my equipment was from one mfg. this teleconverter situation was a lot of lack of knowledge and not wanting to spend that much. I am in my 70’s and on fixed income. Just trying to enjoy what I can afford and happy for those with nice equipment. Part of equation is always the photographer.

Hole between 50 and 70 is really nothing to worry about.
Generally teleconverters are meant to be used with telephoto lenses but even if you found one that worked you are still going to lose two stops of light with a 2X TC making your lens f5.6, probably too slow for indoor basketball.

As a safe practical matter - NO ! - But you can maximize your IQ with the D500 and the Sigma and CROP your way to 70-80mm - and if needed, use well applied pixel enlargement software. The quality of the D500 and the Sigma lens will allow this to happen easily at reasonable ISO's. Even at higher ISO's cropping will be better than losing 1-2 stops light to a TC !
..
Mr Imagemeister, I think your cropping idea makes the best sense, thanks, danoliver
