This is a different approach but I buy SSK m.2 enclousures and put in my old samsung pro 970-990 SSDs. Everytime I upgrade one of my SSDs in my laptop, the old one becomes my new portable. I stick with the samsung SSDs because they are very reliable.

Why would you doubt it? Each of the priority settings have their place and do a very good job just as manual has it's place. Hopefully not hidden in this question is the age old snobism that only real photographers use manual?

I use manual a lot but it is not because "only real photrogaphers use manual". I shoot live theater and a shoot beauty pageants. If I follow the exposure in the viewfinder, I would over expose almost every shot. The stage lights fools the exposure meter on the R7 just like it did with my 7DII. I do have to make adjustments based on dress color and how many are wearing the same color dress. Crowning is done in white dresses and when 40+ girls are in white gowns, I adjust the fstop up and the iso down.

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I'm going up in late February to shoot the northern lights.
The two strategies I've seen from research are to let the camera/lens acclimate outside and a cute device I came across was a lens wrap that had compartments for hand warmers.

Any suggestions appreciated !

There is an iPhone app called Aurora Pro that gives you the areas that you can view it on any given date.- We went in May 22 and it was too light to see it. Will probably go back in August to give us a better chance. Feb should give you a good chance as long as the sky is clear. You should not have an issue with lens fog when you are outside. Going inside will be the issue.if you bring equipment that has touchscreens (my R7 does as does my iPhone), make sure you bring gloves that support touchscreens. Enjoy Alaska!!

Why is there such a great fear of using adapters when going to mirrorless?
Most everyone here say that lenses are "Forever" and the body can be changed out preferably.
Yet there is a desperate need to change all lenses out because of the fear of using an adapter on perfectly fine lenses. Perhaps a pixel peeper can see the difference between a mirrorless lens and a non-mirrorless lens.
I have found absolutely no issue using an adapter as it just stays on the camera. Also there is no burning desire to swap awesome lenses for other more expensive lenses just because the new camera is mirrorless.

I have only bought 1 RF lens and that is the 18-150 that came with my R7 and I did that because it was the only way I could get the R7 without waiting 6 months to get a body only option. I use the canon EF-RF adapter. In the future I will probably replace my current lenes (when they break) with an RF equivelent but I am perfectly happy using all of my L lenes with the adaptor. I still use my 7DII as a backup body.

I went through this same evaluation a year ago and got some good results from Hoggers. I had a 6DII and SL1 plus a whole series of EF and EFS lenses. I wound up selling both cameras and all but one of my lenses and wound up with the following:
R6
R10
RF 50 1.8
RF 85 2.0
RF 14-35 f4 L
RF 24-105 4-7.1
RF 24-240 4-6.3
RF 100-400 5.6-8
EF-S Tamron 16-300 3.5-6.3 that stays on the R10 with adapter.

With all the sales and trades of all my older equipment in wound up only costing me abou $1000 for everything. The RF 24-105 and 14-35 are the ones mostly used on my R6, and the 16-300 is 99% of the time on my R10.

The R cameras and RF lenses are 10 times above the non-mirrorless cameras and EF lenses, and I never looked back.

How did you get the 16-300 to work? I have the R7 and when I press the shutter button on the R7, it clicks and then I have to remove the battery before the camera will do anything else.

The Canon R5, and likely other of the R series, has 3 shutter modes: mechanical, electronic 1st curtain and all electronic. My question is what is the purpose of the electronic 1st curtain and does anyone use it?

I use the electronic first curtain on my R7. It is so much quieter than mechanical. It also doesnt suffer from the rolling shutter that full electronic has.

I've never understood where the debate is, here. Dedicated cameras AND smartphones all have their advantages and disadvantages. I use both, and will continue to use both. Like JPEG and raw, and slides and negatives before them, I don't see an argument! They have different applications for entirely different workflow situations.

I'm eagerly awaiting the introduction of the iPhone 15 series on September 12, 2023, at 1:00 PM EDT. My iPhone 7 Plus is aging, as its operating system is obsolete, compatibility with the rest of the Apple ecosystem is waning, and its battery is down to 77% of original strength. I will replace it with one of the new offerings. And no, I'm not interested in an Android phone, because I use a Mac. There are too many benefits of the iCloud ecosystem to ignore. Most of the applications I use on the Mac have file-compatible iPhone versions.

My current iPhone has been a very capable device for casual photography. I've used it like a point-and-shoot on a regular basis. When I need the control and flexibility and lens versatility of an interchangeable lens camera, I use one. In many instances, I could use either, but I definitely know when I want to grab my Lumix.

The ultimate solution for me would be the full integration of a smartphone with a dedicated camera. The ability to use an iPhone as if it were an Atomos Ninja 5 or similar external monitor/recorder would be fantastic.

I have an iPhone 12 and feel the same way. I use my R7 for all of my professional work- but I will still use my iPhone and 7DII/R7 depending on what is best when I am on holiday.I went to Alaska a month before the R7 was released so I took my 7DII. I primarily used my 7DII but found in some of the museums, the iPhone was a much better choice. It shot wider than the 16-300 lens I had on the 7DII and could handle the longer exposers without bluring everything. A lot of the items in the display cases required a 1 second exposure. When someone offered to take a icture of me and my wife, i would have them shoot it on my phone because i didnt have to explain how to use BBS on the 7DII.

I have a Canon R7 that is relatively new. I since I could not buy the body only at the time I bought the entire body plus lens kit. I also bought the adapter ring so I could use my non-mirrorless lenses. When I got it I immediately tried all of my lenses on it, and it worked with all of them. I had some health problems during the summer and did not use it much. A week or so ago I decided to use it rather than my &DMII. Fortunately, I tried it out before I left home. When I tried it using my Tamron 18-400 on it the camera had trouble focusing. This never happened before, When I pointed the camera at something it would focus but when I pressed the button to shoot the picture it would refocus into a blur, every time. If I held the shutter release part way down it would continuously hunt for a focus. I didn't have much time, so I put the Tamron on to my 7DMII and it worked fine.
Earlier today I tested it with the Tamron and my Canon70-200 both worked fine. This evening (still daylight) I took these two lenses and the R7 to a shoot and I had almost the
same problem with the Tamron (this time it would not focus with the Tamron). It was better with the canon 70-200 but still not quite right.
I suppose I should send in both the camera and lens to the same place to be checked out but I had to send both during the peak fall sports season. But which place? Canon or Tamron. Both should be under warranty.
Before I do that I was wondering if any one here has had this problem? I was not using the eye tracking feature. Firmware is up to date at 1.3.1 Thanks to all of you in advance

I also have the same lens (except for the tamron, my tamron is the old 16-300 which does not work on the R7). The 70-200 works as well if not better on the R7 than it did on the 7DII. It would appear that you have a setting that is causing an issue rather than a bad camera. I would save your current settings to c1/2/3 and then reset the body back to factory. See if it works in factory settings. If it does then you can assume it was the combo of settings that you had that caused the issue. Start adding your settings back one at a time till it stops working (testing again after each setting is applied). It is not fast but it will identify the issue and it will also give you a lot of testing time with the new body which will give you a lot of knowledge with that settings do what things.

I shoot a lot of dance and dog sports (99% indoors under not ideal lighting conditions). I tend not to use eye focus but an expanded focus as I am trying to lock onto the center of the dog or dancer's body. Even with eye tracking off, the R7 will still try to identify the head in expanded focus mode.

I have an EOS 5DIV and recently purchased an R5 with the EOS lens adapter. My intention, when I first bought the R5, was to use it until I was was comfortable with it and then sell the 5DIV and EF lenses purchasing RF lenses of similar range as replacements. Since purchasing the R5 I have purchased an RF800mm lens that I occasionally use and enjoy. As I contemplated following through with my plan it suddenly struck me that it may not make sense to follow through with the plan, especially since I have enjoy the flexibility of having two cameras of this quality available at the ready. As a result I thought I would throw it out to the wider experience base of UGG for opinions.

With two fairly high quality cameras that I can currently shoot every lens with except the RF lens (forget that the transition would cost a significant bundle for the moment) does it really make sense to change out the EF lenses for RF? Is there significant photo quality to be gained in going from using EF lenses on an R5 to all RF lenses? Even if I sold the 5DIV would it make sense to go from EF to RF?

I purchased a Canon R8 mirrorless body and have found a problem that I need help with. Is there a setting that will prevent touching the screen with my thumb while I have the camera up to my face using the view finder.
I was on an evening shoot, and later discovered that my thumb must have touched the screen in the lower right corner and changed the focus point. To correct this, I had to turn the “Touch Control / Standard” off and use the camara like a DSLR by focusing on the center focal point and then re-composed the shot. This is not the way this camera was designed to be used!

I know…Keep your thumb of the screen and you will not have this problem. Any other suggestions?

P.S. So far, I am really impressed with this camera as the focus is really sharp and fast and the eye focus is amazing.

The way I handle this with my R7 is to keep the screen turned around unless i am showing someone a picture. It has the side effect of saving battery power.

It's time to update my laptop. With all the new software, my laptop cannot keep up.
I use many Adobe products for my photography processing. The new Lightroom noise reduction feature is amazing, but runs very, very slow on my current laptop.
With photo processing in mind, I'm looking for recommendations from our members that have upgraded their laptop.
Performance is more important than cost.
Looking forward to hearing about your experiences!

I have just received my new laptop. i should know in a few days how it runs. i have a lenovo X1 with an 8th gen i7, 3TB of m2 ssds and 64gb ran with a nvidia 1050 graphics card.

The new laptop is an asus proart. it came with a 1tb m.2 ssd, 32gb of ram, and a nvidia 4070 graphics card with 8gb ram. I also bought at the same time 2 samsung 990 2tb ssd and 2 sticks of 5200 ddr5 ram so i can get my base config as close to the lenovo as possible. the new laptop is running a 13gen i9 processor. i will use samsung's software to clone the old to new. My old laptop will become my field laptop that i take to shows (dog shows to display my photos for people to purchase).

Jim,

Most likely Canon made a change to their web site security to keep people from trying to browse their directories.

This morning, June 6th. Canon has released new firmware that incorporates support for the about to be released Canon EL-5 smart flash and also some minor bug fixes. It is now available on the Canon US support site.

Just a minor correction. The new firmware is 1.3.1 and it was released on 5/31/23 (canon us site).

Release 1.3.0 was release on 3/2/23. I do appriciate the heads up. i like to keep my camera current.

I love that line from "Jaws" about a "bigger boat." I like carrying a small camera that fits into a case on my belt, but this Sony WX9 falls short. There's no viewfinder, and the picture quality leaves something to be desired unless there is lots of light. I think I'll start looking for a small camera. My cell phone is small, but it's a phone, not a camera. It doesn't have a viewfinder! 😂

In many situations, it's not practical to carry a DSLR or a mirrorless. I'm restricted to only two arms and two shoulders. I hope Human 2.0 comes better equipped.

I have carried the fugi finpix and olympus tg waterproof cameras when I needed small and exposed shooting where i didnt want to carry my dslr (mirrorless now). They take surprisingly good pictures and i dont have to worry about getting them wet. They were also great for skiing because they can take impact and they fit fine in my skijacket. I have used several models over the last 10 years. I will say that the latest iPhone does a surprisingly good job.
