The 500pf is very sharp, small and easy to handle, but no zoom so less flexible. Often use it on a D500 and teleconverters which I did in Alaska to really stretch without a monster to carry.
Overall, many more pros than cons.
My primary walk around combo is a 28 to 300 on a D850.
I regularly use the pair in walks in mixed terrain or mixed targets.
Personally I like Kirk. Reliable, friendly/helpful.
That will be a great combo -- each camera has unique strengths!!
Major improvements in focusing speed and tracking moving objects (birds, racing cars) nice to have is built in gps.
Thanks, your comments are on target. Would sell D5 (or make it a "multi year" Christmas present to my son)
I am a long time Nikon user (since 1966). Shoot with D5, D850, D500. Mostly nature/travel.
Anyone have experience with the D6 yet. I am interested in hearing your thoughts. Thanks.

28 to 300 !!!
Been all over the world: Africa, Galapagos, South and Central America, Alaska, Morocco, Europe, etc. Have 20 by 30 and larger prints in my house and have sold/given prints to friends, etc.
Will work with tele-adapters if needed!!!
You will have a lot of fun with that lens plus the holy trinity. add 200 to 400 for safari work.

Panasonic zs series. Very flexible, small, rugged. Carry one all the time in my car. Use it for backups when travelling or videoing a grand kids musical.
Look at Africa Dream Safaris. Traveled with them twice (two weeks each time). A well trained guide and my wife an I were in our own vehicle (not in a group of vehicles) doing whatever we wanted to d from dawn until dusk every day. If we wanted to watch something we did: two and a half hours watching a mother and three cheetah yearlings slowly devouring an antelope or two hours watching a pair of lions mating, cuddling, mating, cuddling or watching a group of lions setting and then springing a trap on a group of antelopes.
Our guide/driver had the sun over my shoulder and the engine already off before we stopped
Check out their incredible website. Africadreamsafaris.com
Check out "Africa Dream Safaris" online. It is a small company owned by an American that that does the best (not cheap) safaris. Only in Tanzania. My wife and I traveled with them twice for 2 weeks each time. Just our smart, personable Tanzanian guide and the two of us. We worked together with them to design our itinerary before the trip and they organize everything from the minute you arrive in Tanzania until you leave. They really understand what photographers want and need: things like motor off fast, sun behind us etc. We have recommended to several friends who have had the same great experience. They have won several awards. Enjoy.
Panasonic zs70. Reliable, versatile, long zoom, manual or auto. Almost always have it with me. My wife has one too.
