Hello my hedgehog family,

I would like some suggestions. I have the trinity 2.8 lens collection and several others to compliment those; however, what I would like to have is a zoom lens that would cover a wider focal distance range from maybe 14 to 150 or longer as a go to walk around lens to keep from having to carry two lenses.

Are you hoping for a 15-180 f2 Nikkor weighing 9 ounces? (They don't make it yet!) You will have to compromise on having a fast aperture, but Nikon does have a very good 28-300 zoom. My 24-120 f4 is excellent for covering wide to medium tele.

No, not at all, the weight doesn't bother me in the least in fact, I love the feel of a beefy combo that's one of things I love about my D850. I was just trying to not have to carry an extra lens to cover a given focal distance.

I would go with the 28-300 zoom. Great range for one lens.

Okay, you're the second to suggest that lens, thanks.

Another to consider
Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens

Those are DX lenses.
The OP’s D850 is full-frame camera.

I have the Trinity to use on my D810 but my most used lens is the 24-120 f/4. No, it’s not quite as sharp as the 24-70, but it’s a pretty good performer for the convenience.

My 2 cents:
D850 deserves top glass. 70-200 2.8 VR or 300 and 500pf. Cheap will disappoint.
I bought the new 70-300 E and not happy. Terrible distracting bokeh an Not tack sharp. Older 200-400 kills them all.

My copy of the 28-300 is not reliably sharp, possibly I got a bad one. The 24-120 is quite satisfactory, as is the 24-85, though it doesn't deliver the range you require. Again, missing the low end you want, the old AF Nikkor 75-300 4.5 5.6 is a real jack of all trades, sharp, and cheap enough that I bought one to give to a friend.

I am a Nikon shooter, and I own a closet full of Nikon and Nikon mount lenses for my D800 and D810, so I am fully invested in Nikon. I was contemplating the same thing you are at this point in time, but I could not bring myself to spend almost $1000 on a lens that I know I wouldn't use because of the image quality I experienced using several copies in the past. So I made an unusual choice. (see below).

Before you make a decision, look at the list of recommended lenses for the D850. If a Nikkor lens is not on the list, I will venture that you may not be thrilled with it.

https://www.dslrbodies.com/cameras/camera-blogs/the-d850-blog/the-best-lenses-for-the.html

The dilemma is that you have an outstanding camera that takes amazingly detailed images. Putting a mediocre lens like a 28-300 or similar on it is like owning a Maserati and buying the 4 tire special for $400 at Costco. Yeah, it will work, but you won't be happy. If you don't care about image quality then it's probably a good fit.

Thinking out of the box a bit - just about nothing beats the convenience of a Sony RX10M4. It provides very good image quality, has an excellent zoom range, with an equivalent 24-600mm F2.4-F4 lens designed by Ziess, and a extremely fast hybrid auto focus system borrowed from their higher end cameras. If you are looking to avoid changing lenses in the field and are even considering a 28-300, I think you will be far happier with the results from the Sony. Here are a few samples for you to consider as you make a decision.

I've used 3 copies on a D800 and a D810 and I can say, without hesitation, I share your experience with the 28-300. It's one of the few lenses that Nikon makes that I would never own, and strongly recommend against. It's actually not terrible on a 12 mp camera like a D700 or D3S, and does a somewhat decent job on a crop sensor camera, but it would be the absolute last choice for a D850. Getting a bad 28-300 is an oxymoron.

I have all the Nikkor lenses mentioned above. I too wanted one all around lens for most occasions. January this year I bought a Tamron 35-150 mm 2.8 lens for my everyday lens. I tried it and loved it. Lighter than most Nikkor lenses and much sharper than my 24-120 or the 28-300. I find that I am using it more and more. I have it on my D850 90% of the time.
