Yesterday, for something to do and wanting to see a bit of their operation, if I could, I, along with a friend, drove the 180 miles to Canon's S. Brunswick, NJ repair facility. Dropped off my 7DII for their 18 point DSLR maintenance service at about 11 AM. $129 plus tax and return shipping. Last evening I got an e-mail that my camera was done and had been turned over to Fed-X at 5PM. Darn quick service!
Other then the drive which gave my friend and I some photo ops, the Canon part of the trip was pretty much a bust. You walk in the door, there is a counter in front of you, you fill out the necessary paperwork, use your credit card, and that's it. Nothing else to see. The woman on the counter was very pleasant and happy to answer any questions. Told us that they have had very few eclipse related repairs and that they have 7 repair technicians. 5 for cameras and 2 for video. Considering the size of the operation I expected far more. Even those can't be too busy if they got my camera turned around that quick.
Two buildings. A big one for repair, corporate offices and probably training, etc. A much bigger one that, from the number of loading docks, must be their distribution warehouse. I'd love to be turned loose in there!
I read someplace that Canon's west coast facility has equipment to try, etc, for customers bringing in their gear. Was hoping for the same here. Oh well. Probably a good thing I didn't get to play with any new toys!

I think you got some bum dope about the "west coast facility." I've been to the Irvine, CA service center (I'm only 100 miles away) and it's no different from your description of the NJ facility. The only thing I got to play with was the two battery chargers I brought with me compared to one they had at the counter. Not very exciting, but the service was great: they handed me a new battery over the counter in trade for the one I had bought that was DOA.

Get Xume magnetic filter adapters. Pop your filters on and off in less than a second.

I had a question about those, Jerry. Does the adapter totally prevent light leakage? I thought total eclipse photography would be a great use for them (rapid removal during totality) but you're using is an 18-stop ND filter during the partial phases. If the adapter has any leakage, your photos would be bad, and worst case scenario would be lens or camera damage. TIA.

Nice shots. I'm tempted to get a solar filter. The sun can do serious damage to a camera.

You should have jumped at a filter before the eclipse. The one I bought from B&H has increased in price 30% now that the eclipse is over. OTOH, you might want to check for used filters.

If It was Bob'sBargainBatteries, I'd day No, but Adorama is reliable. "Used" covers a lot of territory, so give it a good test and see how many shots it gives you, or at least see if it's comparable to your original battery without necessarily using it up completely.

Jerry, the Canon 5D Mk III (and all the cameras that use the same battery) automatically registers and keeps track of the condition of any chipped battery you put in it. There's no need for a test: the battery info screen tells you the remaining charge AND the remaining life of the battery.

Somewhat related. How many times have you been to an event where there is a table of food, and people stand in front of the table eating and talking?

Also, for some reason, people seem to find a doorway to be the perfect spot to stop and talk. People are rude idiots, myself excluded. : )

You forgot the people who step off an escalator and stand there, especially at the airport. Jackasses, all!

This happened to me twice on my Galaxy S4. I turned the phone on, and within a minute, the bright light for the flash turned on. The only way I could turn it off was to turn the phone off.

Is there a way to turn that light on? Is there a way to turn it off?

Jerry, I have the same phone. Try this: go to the Task Manager (hold down the button until Task Manager is one of 3 choices and press it). At the top, press Active Apps. See if that list includes anything that might be controlling the flash--if so, end it.

Hope that helps.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the problem is that the photo as shot was blown out (overexposed). It looks like you tried to correct that in post-processing because the histogram has nothing in the "whites" range and only a little (all red) in the "highlights" range. The prominent petals on the right look flat to me, which is where you've gone beyond the ability to recover any detail.

Counterintuitively, play around with magenta in HSL. First try amping up the luminance as far as you can: you'll find detail that is lost in red, and the blue tinge will go away.

Kind of funny that they had to deploy it with a tugboat escort. That's sure good propaganda!

Should I upgrade or not. I have a Canon 40D and was thinking of up grading but not sure if it is worth it. Are some of the newer models much better then what I have?.

I have a 40D. I bought the 50D as soon as it was available. The sensor in the 50D was VASTLY improved. I think the DIGIC chip was newer, too, but I'm not sure. My photos were sharper at normal size, not just to pixel-peepers. The low-light (ISO) performance was better, too.

I would use the 50D today as a backup. Not so with the 40D.

So you've skipped the 50D, 60D, and 70D and all the incremental improvements. You can get the 80D today from Amazon for $1099. The battery and memory cards are different now, so you'll have to figure on replacing those, too. Same goes for any wired shutter release.

Take a look at the new features (video! Wi-Fi! in-camera editing, sort of! ISO 28000(?)!)

Yes, the newer models are MUCH BETTER than what you have. Only you can answer the question whether it's worth it to you to upgrade.

Why not the President himself or Hillary do not go on a nationwide television and lecture that crowd that do not know what they are complaining about?
Since they do not accept aa democratic process, in what kind of system they want to live? Or maybe they are democrats only when their candidate win.
Can't they realize the world is watching us..? What a shame....really I feel shame.....

President Obama did go on national television to appeal for a calm and gracious transfer of power. Something including the words, "the sun still came up..." Perhaps you don't watch news shows.

Personally, I find it funny that it was Trump who complained that the elections were rigged and withheld acceptance of the outcome, which the other side, so sure of victory, found deplorable. Now look who can't accept the outcome of the election.

Oh, and thanks for the chuckle, Grant.

Yes, Canon's west coast service center is in Irvine, CA. I've had great experiences with them, in sharp contrast with the NJ office.

I had a Canon Rebel XT of similar vintage and technology. Eventually I got a Pentax small sensor MILC Q-7 to replace my Canon Elph; in the six months before the Rebel died, the Q-7 had convinced me that it was better in many settings than the elderly Rebel was. You don't appreciate the technology advances 2007-15 until you actually use them.

Or perhaps as I suggested, the "technology advances," once you've actually used them, turn out to be fools gold. I stand by my statement that, boiled down, says the 50D is a great camera and those that followed it in that line have what I consider mostly frivolous new features. For many 50D shooters it doesn't make sense to use a broken, repairable camera as an excuse to spend $1000 or more on the newest model. Some here have that mindset; others need to use their money more wisely.
