Buying a used battery from Adorama

I misplaced my camera battery for my canon 5d mk3 and saw a used battery from adorama for $26, new would be $64. Is there something wrong with buying a used battery? Adorama gives me a 30 day satisfaction warranty on it, anyone ever had this experience?

That price is less than half the price of a new one. So if you get a lifespan of at least 50% plus, you will have your money's worth. Check to see if it is a Canon Brand. I would never buy a used aftermarket battery. I buy new Nikon and Watson batteries only. Later, you may want to check on Watson aftermarket. Good batteries. They may make one for your Canon. I would never purchase used batteries...buy new.

Me too apart from when I bought a used K5 and the battery is absolutely fine. Seems to be better than the new battery I bought for the grip to be fair. It's quite rare that I use the main battery as I use the grip battery first and when i do the grip battery is always fully recharged before the main battery runs flat. So both batteries are good enough.
The last time I had a problem was with a video camera using tape which could use a battery faster than I could recharge a battery. Dslr's tend to be pretty good on batteries unless you are using the internal flash a lot or live view.

If It was Bob'sBargainBatteries, I'd day No, but Adorama is reliable. "Used" covers a lot of territory, so give it a good test and see how many shots it gives you, or at least see if it's comparable to your original battery without necessarily using it up completely.

If you intend to keep your camera for a few years, just by the new one.

I have never directly purchased a used aftermarket battery, but have perhaps a half a dozen or so that came with used camera purchases on Ebay. Not a single issue with any of them; same for aftermarket batteries that sell new for a fraction of the OEM. Printer Ink and Batteries are two areas where I feel the major manufacturers way over price their product. Another is lens hoods!

I'd think I would buy new. Not sure how you tell how many re-charges a battery has had? Chances are you are not going to know much in the first 30 days about the battery's remaining life. Just a thought.

Obviously you have never had a battery create problems on a shoot. When you are out in then wilderness framing a once-in-a-lifetime shot of your favorite animal and your battery dies you will see the folly of your "save money at any cost" attitude. No 30 day warranty is going to help you then. Get off the cheap and put quality equipment in your hands. Batteries in photography are as important as the camera itself. No battery-no shot!

This is true but it's also true if you don't have another battery and to be fair i've not had a camera not give me a low battery warning (granted sometimes thats within 30 seconds of turning the camera on).
Ideally you want 2 batteries as a minimum, my K5 has 2 L-ion batteries 1 in the body 1 in the grip and the grip can take 6 AA cells(and a spare SD card).
Only having 1 battery is a potential problem, it still will be flat if you forget to charge it. So as a second battery it's a fair option that could get anyone out of a hole. Maybe the best strategy would be to buy 2 or get a new one as well as the used one.

This is not an argument against cheap batteries, it is an argument for carrying an extra with you. I have never had a battery suddenly fail as a consequence of a defective battery in over 100,000 shots. But I have extra fully charged batteries in all my gear bags and my pocket too. 80% of my batteries are cheap. No issue.

I think a nice camera like that deserves a new battery. Get the used one as a back-up.

Before I bought a used battery I would buy a pair of Wasabi batteries with a battery charger for $27 on Amazon or Ebay. I have been using them for years with no problems. They have performed as well as the new batteries that came with the cameras. I did had one that was around 6 months old that started requiring more frequent recharges. I wrote a note to Wasabi and had a new battery in my mailbox in 4 days. No charge. Their customer service is excellent. My first preference would be a new OEM battery with Wasabi batteries for spares.
