Should I upgrade or not. I have a Canon 40D and was thinking of up grading but not sure if it is worth it. Are some of the newer models much better then what I have?.

A better question...

Are you satisfied with what you have?

Answer that question and you answer yourself.

New camera that are better? Of course they are (or so we can hope) but the reality is not there. You know it, I know it. So....

What doesn't your camera do that you would like it to do? You didn't mention what lens you are using; if you aren't using good glass maybe a really good lens would be the answer.

Your camera is 9 years old with 10.1 megapixels. You wanted to know if it was worth upgrading. And are the newer models much better. The answer is yes, the newer cameras are better. However, if you are satisfied with your camera, as is. Keep on clicking. Photographers still use film cameras older than yours.

I have a 40D. I bought the 50D as soon as it was available. The sensor in the 50D was VASTLY improved. I think the DIGIC chip was newer, too, but I'm not sure. My photos were sharper at normal size, not just to pixel-peepers. The low-light (ISO) performance was better, too.

I would use the 50D today as a backup. Not so with the 40D.

So you've skipped the 50D, 60D, and 70D and all the incremental improvements. You can get the 80D today from Amazon for $1099. The battery and memory cards are different now, so you'll have to figure on replacing those, too. Same goes for any wired shutter release.

Take a look at the new features (video! Wi-Fi! in-camera editing, sort of! ISO 28000(?)!)

Yes, the newer models are MUCH BETTER than what you have. Only you can answer the question whether it's worth it to you to upgrade.

At least 18% better. Compare what you have now with what you might want to get.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

My advice is to read about all of the features of the newer cameras, then you compare them to the features that you have. If the newer features are important to your shooting style, then go from there. It really is that simple, it is called doing your homework.

As others have said, YES the new models ARE better than what you have. If you want better quality photos and more versatility from your camera, then you NEED to upgrade. If you have reached the point where you are dissatisfied with the quality of results you are getting and want to progress with your photography, then you are at a point where in order to do that, you MUST upgrade.

As Jerryc41 pointed out, you need to do your homework so the camera you choose has the qualities you want. My philosophy of buying photography gear is to get the best you can afford! And if you want equipment that is beyond your budget new, then look at refurbished and pre-owned. Trusted vendors are your best source, because they tell you the condition of the product and when you get it you are not disappointed!

Happy hunting and have fun!

You need to go to a camera store and see what you need, not what we need. what will work for you we DO NOT know.
