I would go with a used Nikon 3000 series. You can get a 3200 or 3300 for a couple hundred dollars with a lens.
Canon is a good choice also.
No reason to spend big bucks on a camera, it will take years to outgrow these.

I like the 3000 series cameras for just a carry camera but if you have any old Nikon lenses you can’t use them on this body.
The new z cameras are a lot lighter but are pricey.

I don’t think there is any settings that will duplicate the D200. It was the processor that gave you the warm colors. I had a D200 for many years and I loved that camera. I got the idea I needed more megapixels and better low light performance and bought a D300. It wouldn’t duplicate the colors of my D200 either. Before the D200, I had a D40, a 4mp camera. If you didn’t have to enlarge the photo, it was just as good as the D200.
Having gone through many of the latest and greatest of the digital, I have gone back to film. Unless it breaks, I won’t have to upgrade my cameras every year.

The K1000 was my first serious camera. Try to get a Nikon F for $300. I used my Pentax from 1970 to the present. I switched to Nikon when I went digital but I still use my Pentax when I want to shoot black & white, digital still can’t duplicate film and I like to experiment with the Lomography specialty films.

I usually buy used Nikon Speedlights. They are built like a tank, last for years and can be had for pennies on the dollar.
Usually you don't have compatibility problems if you upgrade to a newer Nikon camera.

I strongly agree. If you do most of your business online, your local photo store won't be there for long. I buy my developing supplies and used equipment from him.
I can't buy my new cameras from him because I just can't afford it. B&H and KEH are just too good to pass up. I'm sure he doesn't make much on new equipment anyway. I don't think it hurts him because I may buy a new camera every 3 to 5 years anyway.

I would try to go with the D7xxx. Then you could use the camera and buy glass at a later date.

This DIY Snoot directs the light to a specific area. On macro's, a lot of the time you need a strong light source because you use a smaller F-stop for better depth of field.
I guess it depends on the size of the subject.

I use JPEG's because of the smaller file size. Big help when you are posting a photo.

I had a D3200 and loved the camera. Light weight, lots of goodies for a new photographer. I traded it in for a D300. I don't plan on going to full frame so I bought the 35mm 1.8 but don't use it very often. The advantage of the D300 is the ability to use old lenses. I bought an old 135mm 2.8 AI for $50.00. Super sharp. I also have quite a few old automatic lenses. When you look at it the D3xxx and D5xxx, they will cost you more in the long run because of the price of buying new glass. I can use any lens Nikon built from 1977 on.

Photography is my hobby, I still use film 35mm, 120 and I even do tintype. Photography is also an art, I try to learn as much as I can to improve my images, I don't think the new technology will completely replace the DSLR, at least for the next 100 years, I have cameras that are over 100 years old and still produce a good image.
Take a good photographer and give him(or her) a 4mp toy camera and they will blow away a newbie with $10K worth of new technology.
I have seen great shots done with a smart phone but I don't want to just point and shoot, I want a picture that people will remember.
I will now jump off of my soapbox.

I still shoot film, mostly medium format b & w. I have a Yashica 124g and a Diana F+ for that. I also shoot IR with a Nikon N6006 from time to time.
I have an old Durst enlarger for prints or I can scan my negatives into my computer.
For about $100 you can get the chemicals, a thermometer and a can for developing film.
I use Photographers Formulary.
This year I am going to get into tintype, it doesn't have to be the latest and greatest to have fun.

I still have a number of film cameras. Canon eos elan, nikon n6006, yashica 35, Pentax k1000 and a Yashicamat 124g. The Yashica 124g is the only one I use anymore.
As far as I know, no digital can match the quality in b&w as a medium format film. I was sending my film off to be developed was invested $100 in chemicals and $20 for an old eclipse developing can. I'm lucky to have an old friend who has an enlarger. Even with out all of this you can send the film off for developing and have it back in two weeks. You had to wait two weeks back in the days before Walmart so that's not a big deal for m.

This lens will fit the D200, D300, D500, D7xxx, and I think all of the full frame sensor Nikons.
