Newbie, have a D70S and gonna upgrade. Between a D3300 or D3400 or D5500.

None have a focus motor so your old AF glass may not autofocus.

I'm a Canon bug, but I purchased the D3300 2 yrs. ago, to see how Nikon was. I use it for my grab and go as it is smaller. It takes really nice photos. I like it!!

That's not what the OP asked.
D5500, or a refurb D7100 or D7200.
I love my D5500 with the touch screen. Using non touch screens now seems archaic and much slower. I would not get another camera without a touch screen.

The D5500 is the best of the three. The D3300 would rank as second place, over the newer D3400. The D3xxx series are considered entry-level cameras. All three would be better than what you have. All three have 24 megapixels sensors. None of the three has the internal focus motor. The D3300 still sells, but is now discontinued. You will need to purchase AF-S or AF-P Nikon lenses to get auto focus. Or Third Party lenses that auto focuses. Otherwise, you'll have to do it the old way. Manual focus. Not that bad, really. Just slower.

Geesus. Folks just can't answer a simple question. The OP listed the cameras and they did not include a D7100 or D7200.
I was suggested the D5500 and I am glad I got it - fantastic pics, easy to learn and use, and will stay with you a long time. Lenses are not a problem for the most part because they make so many quality ones for the DX and the older FF lenses still work beautifully just in manual. I have a Tokina 100 that is for FF but is wonderful on the D5500 manually. I will work up to the D7200 eventually but it has a longer learning curve and is heavier.

Why would you "work up" if you are as happy with the D5500 as you seem to be.?

Next time you are about to get ran over I’ll remember to not warn you.

Thanks. You just made my day.
Mainly the AF motor (so I can use FF and great older glass) and the dual sd cards. But the AF points and light level range is so much better and it would be handy having the wireless flash. The weather proofing is nice too. The lack of touch screen is something I would miss however! It would be my last camera body.

I was gifted a d3400 and I really like it..... but I am learning thru it (MASP, BBF, WB, EC etc)and find that I will soon get to a point where I can use a better body.
Of the three you listed, the 5500 would be my choice. The MAIN reason are: Better focus motor/sensor, and more focus points/cross focus points. The touchscreen is not a concern to me, the video holds little interest. I Jones for faster and more accurate focus. Other than that, I came from a D50 (and on that camera I was an "auto guy") and the improvement is staggering!!! Best to ya.
