The only thing I can think of is the extra wear and tear on your camera and battery. I use a reader to pull images to my computer and generally, unless I'm really pressed for cards and time, leave the pics on the card until I've worked them then I put the card back in the reader, verify through the Lightroom duplicate function that I have pulled all the images then use the Disk Utility to erase and reformat to exFAT.

Wow! What a deal. Says a lot for the company that they would substitute a much higher end camera than the one you ordered. Most would simply tell you that the one you ordered is out and on back order. Kudos for them, and great for you. She won't regret it. And great collection, by the way.
You did say it wasn't B&H, if you don't mind, who gave you such great service?

Interesting challenge. I work for a fire sprinkler company. Below are some photos of some our work.

This is a fire pump room that I designed and photographed. It is (3) 3000gpm diesel fire pumps.

In these photos we installed foam generators for a museum aircraft hangar, Fantasy of Flight. These photos are of the test after the install. The hangar filled with foam to 6 feet high in about 8-10 minutes. The gentleman you see in the photos is the owner Kermit Weeks.

Nice! Like this one, too! I need to explore abstraction more.

I'm always intrigued by the accidental abstracts. I was shooting a dark event with the intention of capturing "ghosts".

I use Lightroom for Flickr and it's the same process as indicated above. It's the Yahoo thing.

The verbage used in my life is if an image is "matted" it's in a clear resealable envelope with a semi-temporary mount sandwiched between a backboard and mat so they can slip it into a frame easily. I make and sell either Fuji deep matte prints that are c-process, typically photograph, or fine art print which is also on a matte, cotton, Epson paper. I never send a print in a tube. I send it between cardboard in a box.

And the mechanism my editor uses to make a virtual copy is to add an additional sidecar file. What is the mechanism that Lightroom uses?

The sidecar is embedded in the DNG so it's embedded in the virtual DNG.

So what happens it you want to process the same file in multiple different ways. My editor uses one raw file and creates a separate sidecar files for each edit path. How is that handled with DNGs?
In Lightroom Classic it's a virtual copy.

I have been converting all of my CRW, CR1, and CR2 files to DNG ever since I discovered DNG, which was about 4 years ago.
In my Photographic Art business, I use Photoshop, Lightroom, Elements, InDesign, Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Photo-Paint, Paintshop Pro, Topaz, Redfield, Nik, onOne, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Photomatix, DxO Optics Pro, Watercolor Studio....
Those are just off the top of my head.
I have not had a problem using DNG files in any of them.
I've been doing this as well from the time I made the switch to digital. The digital Pentax I bought to replace the ancient film Pentax used DNG. When I made the transition to Sony I've continued in DNG with no issue. When I was recently exploring a Sony camera fail I submitted a file to an online site to get the shutter actuations.
