What am I doing wrong???

Over the years, I’ve owned and used a number of digital cameras from at least five major manufacturers, up to my current Canon G16 and Canon70D. I have used memory cards – from reputable brands – in all of them. I download my picture files directly from the camera to my computer and then erase them from the card (while in the camera). I never have formatted any memory card – in or out of the camera. I never have had a problem of any kind with this routine!

What am I doing wrong?

Loren,
I don't see any problem, necessarily, with your routine. You didn't mention that you were experiencing any either. So my suggestion is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Personally, I take my cards out and transfer my files from them in the computer then put them back into my cameras to format, and I do it quite frequently. I have also never had any problems.

That being said, there are schools of thought that formatting is extra abuse that could cause the card to fail. But after 30 years in the computer world, I have very seldom ever experienced a problem with any of the media due to proper use, of which, formatting is one.

My point is just this. What works for you is good for you so continue to do the same old thing.

One final note...The one thing that you get from never removing you card from your cameras is that you are less likely to lose them like my friend did on a $20,000 wedding shoot.

Hope that helps a little.

Reformat in camera after each download AND backup.

Most camera manufacturers advise that a camera card be formatted.

Since you have never had any problem, I would say that what you are doing wrong is worrying about what you are doing wrong.

I sympathize with your dilemma... I have a similar one... Over and over on calculators from 5 or more companies and added 2+2 and the answer comes out 4 .... what am I doing wrong?? Obviously nothing. In fact, regarding camera memory cards, when one reviews images in-camera one has the option to delete [erase] unwanted images.

The logic professor in my Junior year would have admonished me for asking a self-answering question and would have said "why are you not making a statement such as, "I erased photos within my camera and find it convenient and it functions well in the many different cameras I have had." He would ask why state something so as to confuse your audience. I, of course, would not be harsh like that professor.

You mean apart from asking silly questions? Seriously, if you "have never had a problem of any kind..", Be happy, knock on wood, and keep shooting. The only thing I can think of that you are "doing wrong" is not sharing any of your images in the Photo Gallery.

I’ve been working with computers since before the days of the Trash 80 (though I never used one), “mobile phones” since they came in a near suitcase sized box and cost $10,000, and cameras since the “Box Brownie” – first good camera was a Voigtlander Vitessa. Tongue-in-cheek I was wondering why so many seem so adamant that a memory card MUST be formatted, and IN the camera in which it will be used. Is it really just one of those “your mileage may vary” things???

It is simple. You use the memory card in a camera. The camera maker says you should format the card in the camera. Why do something different for no apparent reason?

Loren, what you are doing wrong is pretty obvious: erasing the pictures simply because you transferred them to your computer. Why? Because if your computer fails or you have another glitch before you back up to another medium, then you just lost your shoot.

I am in not in such a rush. I have three cards, 2 8M and 1 16M. I dislike jumbo sized cards. I transfer the files from a shoot and continue using the card until filled. I then take the oldest card, pop it into the camera and move the full card to the back of the line. With the new and previously filled card in the camera, I reformat it. I reformat merely because that is faster than going through the folders to delete the contents of each.

The time frame is not as deduced. Since I'm not a professional photographer, taking thousands of shots daily, it never is necessary for me to delete immediately - or change cards, and never at the end of the download, as offered by downloading software. And I do back up rigorously.

I'm not aware of any rule here that everyone who participates in the forums is required to post images in the Photo Gallery.

I agree "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." However, I find it much quicker to reformat the card than to erase the images.
