I hook my cameras to my computer through a usb port and download directly to a raw image disk drive (.nef files), then pull into Lightroom Classic CC from the disk drive. So right here I have the images on the camera mem card and on a disk drive. Lightroom saves a backup to another disk drive (.dng file format), so here they are in the camera and on 2 different disk drives. Then use the delete function on the camera to delete all images off of mem cards. Camera ready for the next shoot and images are on two different drives. I never pull the mem cards out of the body (unless I run out of room during a shoot). I do recommend you save your images on two different drives because mechanical drives will eventually fail.

I'm not aware of any rule here that everyone who participates in the forums is required to post images in the Photo Gallery.

It isn't a rule, John, it is a courtesy. We are a family of fellow photographers. I like to see your art work and so periodically I share mine. rlv asks what is she/he doing wrong but shared no image to show that something is wrong. Was I wrong to ask for an example?

A clarification: I wasn't talking about anything being wrong with an image - or any aspect of the photography process except as relates to the handling of memory cards. Incidentally, one of these days I will get around to posting some pictures.

You said said it was wrong to not share photos in the Photo Gallery, not posting an example in a thread to show a problem being asked about, which is always recommended.

I was replying to someone who said it was wrong of the OP not to post photos in the Photo Gallery, and then changed to say post one as an example. I never asked the OP to post any photos.

I repeat:

Reformat in camera after each download AND backup.

The only thing you are doing wrong is using sarcasm with folks who are way too literal, sometimes. Frequently knowledgeable, skillful and helpful but way too literal.

That I understand, and have observed frequently. I also have observed, with some distress, that there are some, though seemingly intelligent, who appear unable to understand statements and/or requests couched in straightforward, easy to discern language; comments and answers are propounded bearing exactly no relationship to the initial query.

I’ve been working with computers since before the days of the Trash 80 (though I never used one), “mobile phones” since they came in a near suitcase sized box and cost $10,000, and cameras since the “Box Brownie” – first good camera was a Voigtlander Vitessa. Tongue-in-cheek I was wondering why so many seem so adamant that a memory card MUST be formatted, and IN the camera in which it will be used. Is it really just one of those “your mileage may vary” things???

Loren – Baguio City

I too have been in computers since the Apple II/Radio Shack TRS ("Trash80) and Atari 400/800 Commodor and Sinclair days. My first computer "real" computer was the Atari 400 which I upgraded from it's original 8k to 48k and added a floppy drive to replace the cassette tape, I then got an Apple II and a 720k floppy. I could have purchased a Corvus 10mb hard drive for something like $10,000 but the Apple II was the best on the market at the time. I did have a Z80 card in the computer so that I could write and run CPM code... And my first "real" camera was a Kodak 35 film camera (roughly 1958).

I retired from Nikon in 2013 as a part of their Nikon Professional Services (NPS) or Nikon Professional Support Team.. We recommended that the card/cards be reformatted in camera after each use. I did this with my Nikon D70s purchased from the time when it was first re(4k compact flash card), my Nikon D7100 and Nikon D610 (started with 1mb cards and moved to 64mb cards). I have never had a card go bad on me. I now use my older cards (those being below 32mb) to save copies of the camera settings on, or to save specific photos for carrying to customer's places.. The only cards that I have had fail on me are the old Compaq Flash cards (4gb) that became flaky after years of use.
I guess the point is that I ALWAYS format with a fresh full battery (I have 6 batteries that I always keep freshly charged). I have to admit that (other than the failing Compact Flash cards) I have never had an SD card failure other than user error. Now, I do retire my SD cards but the only reason that I've done that is because I've replaced smaller cards with larger... My D7100 will use a max of 64mb... my wife's D7000 uses a max of 32mb … so I keep a couple of 16mb cards ready for her for emergencies and everything else gets used for samples, or backing up settings.
Basically, the Digital cameras are just computers.

I use my SD card as one of the back ups for my photos and replace them when full. Never erase or reformat.

Over the years, I’ve owned and used a number of digital cameras from at least five major manufacturers, up to my current Canon G16 and Canon70D. I have used memory cards – from reputable brands – in all of them. I download my picture files directly from the camera to my computer and then erase them from the card (while in the camera). I never have formatted any memory card – in or out of the camera. I never have had a problem of any kind with this routine!

What am I doing wrong?

Every month, I triple back up all my images and format my cards in camera; very quick, never a problem...
