Books, such as you mention, do not make this assumption and often give 'step by step' instructions.
As you say, practice changing settings, and also trying different settings with different light conditions. Then when you see something you want to photograph, you will have a good starting point.

I too think that the manuals supplied give the impression is that you all ready have knowledge about the camera. Bought the "Dummy" book for my Nikon and learned a lot more than from the Nikon manual.
