I saw both fighters, one was a brawler, the other a boxer. Both were great for the era's they fought within. Note: Ali didn't dodge the draft, he claimed CO status, took a lot of heat for his beliefs and was vilified by the politicians.

American troops were in Laos and Cambodia covertly (illegally) during much of the conflick especially under Nixon. Ken Burns might cover it later in the series.

You have every right to express your feelings and the hurt. Yes, the senior leadership was bad, from McNamara on down. Vietnam was a wasted war and too many GIs were permanently damaged, such as yourself. From one vet to another, I feel your pain. Memorial Day is to honor those fallen and tha I also solemnly think about.

I was drafted and went in on 06/68-06/70. Worst 2 years of my life! 50 years later....I still can't believe my country did that too me! 50 years later I still can't believe my country put me through that. When I got out....I threw EVERYTHING Army in the trash. I never wear green....never wear shirts with Army on it. I even threw away all my discharge papers....everything Army.
You would think that after 50 years the pain will have gone away....but it's gotten worse! The WORLD is finding out now what I have known for 50 years....the Generals are as crooked as all of them(Flynn).
I was drafted and went in on 06/68-06/70. Worst 2... (show quote)

I remember the U-2 incident and Francis Gary Powers, the pilot who ejected after being hit with a missile. After Powers bailed out, the U-2 glided to earth thus enhancing the Soviet's propaganda efforts. Frank Powers was a friend and I spent many hours with him after he was repatriated. My boss Colonel P. Economy was Powers logistical support officer in Peshawar when he launched his mission. The CIA did much to discredit Powers after he was shot down. Powers wrote a book "Operation Oversight", circa 1960-70, out of print now. A great read. Powers was a true American hero. He died flying a helicopter for a radio station in LA - alleged the helicopter "ran out of gas".
The U-2 mission was entirely different than the SR-71 both then and now (U-2 is now called the "TR-__" aircraft. SR-71 was retired circa 1999.

And that damm fool has NO idea what the consequences of a nuclear weapon. Nuclear weapons are designed to wipe out innocent children and civilians, not just the military.

Your opening sentence holds true to a point. As of 20Jan, it may no longer be applicable. On that date, moving into our White House is a damn fool who asked three times in an hour, "If we have nuclear weapons, why can't we use them?"

Less than 2% of the US population volunteer for military service, the equipment is state-of-the-art. Congress has withheld funding and the country has been at war since 2003

Meanwhile back in the USA our military has been decimated by the current administration. We're spending upwards of $4B per submarine, $85B for new fighters and that's just 2 programs. We're going broke on Defense spending - and it's not time for another Red October. Blame the "administration", but remember Congress provides the money and that drives the spending.

Time for another hunt for "Red October".
