The old Soviet Union, was dismantled by 1992. Now the Cold War is back, and China may soon be a major problem in the South China Sea. Russia and China had joint Naval Operations recently in the South China Sea. Both countries are launching new, stealthy, modern type Submarines to control the Seas. http://thediplomat.com/2016/12/russia-to-launch-2-nuclear-subs-in-2017/

Someone just told me that the original cold war was Harry Truman's fault: If he had just entered us into a peaceful economic competition with the USSR we wouldn't have had the cold war. He's right. Europe would ALL have fallen under the USSR's control and ALL of southeastern Asia would have fallen under China's. To people who believe this crap, dear Uncle Joe (Stalin) and Mao were reasonable, benevolent leaders. I was around at that early time and knew the reality of the situation. And now we have dear, sweet Vladimir (Putin) looking at us. The friend of presidents and the USA. Much less China who would like to crush us economically and militarily.

Perhaps UHH is not the place for such discussions. But the question was raised.

Meanwhile back in the USA our military has been decimated by the current administration.

Time for another hunt for "Red October".

Just not true. We've tried to extricate ourselves from the insane messes we made in Iraq and Afghanistan. Military budget still tremendously huge.

I would prefer talking about depth of field, apertures, shutter speeds IQ and not getting into the stupidity of the ongoing Soap Opera of my party is better than your party, our strategy in going in or getting out is the best. If you want to talk politics, there are places where people are interested and, in my opinion, this is not the proper forum. By the way, for those interested, the campaign SOAP OPERA, is over, now for the second season which is ongoing with the same political hacks and talking heads.

I do agree but wrong headedness as I see it should be responded to. Politics is now, in my judgment, just a distraction from the reality that the very rich and huge corporations are the REAL government. I'll not eliminate myself from this "debate."

The new diesel submarines are cheap and very quiet. In a somewhat recent war game, a French sub defeated U. S. defenses - not sure what kind of sub.

Obviously, we're not spending enough on our military.

Fortunately, Trump has said that he wants to increase our nuclear stockpile because 7,100 nuclear weapons isn't nearly enough.

I remember you mentioning that a while back on another Post. Stealth technology is going to make it difficult to locate those new diesel Submarines. And that is not good. These new Russian Submarines are equipped with nuclear weapons and Stealth Technology. And more are coming.

Our Army and Navy are smaller than any time since before WWI. Every time we've let ourselves grow weak enough that some dictator thought he could knock us off we've been drawn into terrible wars. It's a fact. We need to be so strong no one would dare challenge us. That will keep us out of conflict.
