Top Gear's James May takes an emotional ride to the edge of space in a U2 - the worlds highest-flying airplane - cruising at 70,000ft.
The Lockheed U-2 is a single-engine, very high-altitude surveillance aircraft flown by the United States Air Force. It provides day and night, very high-altitude (70,000 feet/21,000 meters), all-weather surveillance. The aircraft is also used for electronic sensor research and development, satellite calibration, and satellite data validation. It was built in 1955. Wiki

I have been told by former Air Force personnel, that the camera was capable of shooting through clouds.

The SR-71 has a maximum altitude of 85,000 feet, and was faster in speed than the U2. But it lacked the distance in miles that the U2 could cover. The Russians finally developed missiles to bring it down, with Powers aboard as the pilot. He was captured, imprisoned, and released in a deal between the USA and the Soviet Union. A long time ago.

I believe the the Air Force has retired all their Black Birds. I'm sure you know this but because of the way your posting is worded, it appears you are saying F. G. Powers was flying an SR-71 when he was shot down. He was flying a Dragon Lady (U2), which has a top speed of less than one quarter that of the Black Bird. Had he been flying a Black Bird the Soviet missile would have run out of fuel before catching the air craft.

Amazing that the U-2, like the B-52, has been in service for over 50 years - a real tribute to those who designed those two aircrafts.

I'm not a big fan of flying but that would be a once in a lifetime opportunity and is worth the risk in my book.

I remember the embarrassment of America, caught with egg on our face when Lt Powers was shot down. I was around 12 when the shootdown occurred and I remember seeing Nikita Khrushchev beating on the desktop at the UN C.1958 with his shoe. He said Communism would integrate into the USA by our own accord and not through aggression. And Senator Joe McCarthy was right about all of his accusations, the Communists were assimilated into American Politics through the Demoncraft Party.
Enough for politics and back to the image taking and making, lol.
