The GIMP is a really comprehensive editing program, and there are freely downloadable file filters for most RAW file formats. There is also a pretty vigorous user group, so check there. They're friendly folks, and will help you out. Remember, Google is your friend!

Absolutely absurd. There is a generation out there that has been using photographic equipment for much of their lives who have never used a viewfinder. Photography has become available to them because lack of a viewfinder makes their cameras smaller, lighter and cheaper.

Just because we have our prejudices we do not have the right to prevent someone else from having what they want.

RE: your last paragraph- True, but we certainly have the right to try- That's what a boycott is all about ;)

I keep seeming to come accross threads on the sx50 here, and googled it and found it had a zoom equivalent of 14-1200mm, or 50x. That's pretty impressive considering its only f6.3 at the tele, but how come you can't get lenses like this for DSLR's? Canon I know do their 18-200mm, but why couldn't they do a 14-1200 like on the sx50?

Some of the zoom schemes out there have optical zoom - what the lens can do and effective zoom - enlarging the image by saving smaller sections of the image. Not familiar with the camera you're talking about, but that may be one of the ways they get such fantastic zoom ranges. Quality suffers pretty dramatically at the high end.

Mark-

I do so heartily agree! Some business degrees actually add value. Marketing... Not so much. Marketing's all about creating something out of nothing. Does the new P*psi bottle add anything to the quality of the product? But it's sure a marketing point... >sigh<

Yeah, now I'm depressed too. There is no more skilled labor. I work in a factory that makes computer chips. Everything that can be automated is automated. We can eventually hire monkey's to do what automation won't do---like take out the trash and move boxes. I guess my point is that it's not just the employees. Our employers don't want to motivate too many employees with a brain either. This is why I tell my teenage kids to learn a skill in college for their undergraduate degrees. Getting a 4 year degree in business or marketing is such a risk, if not a waste these days.

By the extension of that reasoning, Don DeLilo was right: Terrorists are the only true artists left, because they're the only ones capable of truly surprising people

Boy this strikes nerve with me. The ONLY medium we can be reasonably sure will survive is paper prints. B&W is particularly suited for longevity.

Computers are shipping without CD/DVD drives already. Of course we can buy externals, but the trend is everything from the "cloud."

I see entire family histories being lost due to the stupid and I do mean STUPID idea that digital files are the way to go. Facebook is not your family album and yes, we are learning that CD's burned just few years ago are corrupted.

Did I mention that thinking digital storage will keep images for the future is STUPID. :-)

You hit that one on the head, Cap! Back up, Back up, Back up- and even then you have no guarantee. Don't rely on the home "dye change" burners for archival storage. Commercial concerns will create "real" optical media for a fee.

DO NOT use Gorilla Glue! It will expand into the switch and out from under the cover. The epoxy or Jeweler's Glue are your best options. Use a toothpick or other tiny probe (a little dab'll do ya!)and a good magnifier for placement of the adhesive and switch cover.

Steady hands, nerves of steel. Good luck. Tell us how it turned out.

Let me get this straight... you want to still be able to use the camera- right? Applique brass, wood and brown leather on strategic places. I wouldn't want to destroy another camera and possibly render the one you're using bust.

Here's one I had never heard before. “The most important piece of advice I could offer is simply to take all your lenses out of your bag when you get home. Take off the front and back lens caps and let them thaw out for a few hours. If you leave them on they’ll get condensation in them and mildew can grow on the glass.” – Dan Carr on shooting in cold conditions

You know all those silica gel packs you throw away? Save 'em, line the bottom of an old camera bag with 'em and store your lenses there. Any thermal buffering is helpful, too. Slow temperature change and humidity absorption will help... Just sayin'.

I'd have to disagree with that. I had MS Essentials on my 1 yr. old machine when I got the Java virus. They are just getting entirely too sophisticated now.

I completely agree with you that the crackers are getting vastly more sophisticated. My point is that Security Essentials does the job well, is unobtrusive (doesn't interrupt your workflow several times a day/week etc.) and free. NO antimalware system will prevent ALL malware infections. MS has gotten better about responding to new varieties and providing tools and understandable instructions for removal.

PS I'm no MS fanboy by any stretch.

I have been using Norton symantic 360 for a couple of years. It seems to really slowdown my PC "Windows 7 (64).
does anyone have any experiance with windows Security Essential.??

Yup. Works great, properly configured and updated. MS kinda got it right with this one. IMHO, any company that sponsors any product that installs when you try to install something completely different, and you have to go through all sorts of gyrations to prevent it, is a purveyor of malware. Sorry Symantec.

I have seen a few postings about the meaning of bokeh on this site so I was interested to see a simple explanation while reading a post on Digital Photography School website. For those of you who were not clear on this subject, it said:

Bokeh is a Japanese term for the subjective aesthetic quality of out-of-focus areas in a photographic image.

Also noted was that drool-worthy bokeh comes from prime lenses with large apertures, like f/1.4 and f/1.8 and the subject should be placed far from the background. It was strongly pointed out that the quality of the bokeh was the most important aspect - i.e. good bokeh should not be confused with shallow depth-of-field - the terms are not interchangeable.

I have an urge to purchase a Sigma 8mm 2.8 fisheye lens for my Canon 7d....question is anyone with a fisheye lens any make any camera how often do you use it.......I have a Sigma 10/20 WA a couple of times I could have used the FE.....in the woods or under a bridge no time to rent one ..........looking forward to all replays.....Thank you...Bil

Bill-

I have a fisheye "filter"- I'm only just checking the effect out to see if I like it. There was a time when fisheye lenses were IMHO overused. I actually like some of the shots I took (narrow city street scenes, photos of other convex reflective surfaces and so on)- but by no means all shots.

Having said that, I'm glad I got it as a lens attachment, would not splash for a prime lens.

Just my feelings on the subject...

Sorry, friend: they don't last forever. I don't know ho many cycles the battery has done, but you may have a goner. Thankfully, a spare isn't that expensive.
