Nikon d5100 battery not charging HELPP!!!

Just yesterday I received my nikon d5100 and when it ran out of battery last night, I plugged the battery in. The orange light was blinking indicating that it was charging but in the morning it was still blinking and the battery was empty. I tried other outlets also, but nothing is working.

Since it is new, it sounds like a battery or charger issue - more likely the battery. It may have been sitting on a shelf for too long before being used. Time to look at getting them replaced under warranty.

The better way to handle it with the next battery is to give the battery a full charge before using it the first time, and try to charge it before the camera goes completely dead. This prolongs battery life in everyday use.

Hey Doc ..... you removed the battery from the camera, placed it in the battery charger correct?

..... if it worked for a while then the battery did have a charge to begin with .....

..... try cleaning the contacts on the battery and charger ..... In a quiet room with the charger at your ear you'll be able to hear a slight hum if it's working at all ..... no hum, broken charger .....

Definitely a warranty fix. Unfortunately, you'll be without the battery for a while. Maybe a local camera store can narrow down the problem to either battery or charger. If the charger is good, and it sounds like it might be, then you could just buy another battery and keep shooting till the new one arrives. You really need at least two batteries, anyway.

Sorry, friend: they don't last forever. I don't know ho many cycles the battery has done, but you may have a goner. Thankfully, a spare isn't that expensive.

It's a day-old camera.

Lithium ion batteries are quite different than most others. You do not want to do a full discharge on them. Most cameras will tell you that the battery is low before it gets to the point where it will get so low that it will not charge anymore...ever. These links will provide some interesting facts on lithium ion batteries and the proper way to manage them.

Well it's definately a problem with the charger because I bought a new battery and it still wouldn't charge
