When I bought my laptop, it came with McAfee installed.
Lately it has started to give me "false warnings", for example yesterday I needed some information from a Walmart website - McAfee wouldn't let me enter the website beyond the home page.

On my previous desktop (WinXP OS), the grandkids' desktop (Vista) and my current desktop (Win7) I have Windows Security Essentials installed.
It works great and catches stuff that tries to come in but shouldn't.
I have set it so it does a complete scan of my system on Saturday starting at 10:00 pm. When I get up in the morning, it's done. Just have to remember to unplug my external drive(s): Recently I had two of them plugged in, both of them with 600-700 GB stuff on them, and the scan was not yet finished in the morning.
I still scan the externals I have used but on a different night than the main system.
All in all, I am more than happy with WSE.

I only use Microsoft Defender and Security Essential and have for over 2 years. Although now, you can't load Defender with Win 8 because it's engine is included in Win 8.

I haven't used Norton in years, although some friends use it and like it. I've heard about it taking up too much of the system's resources and being hard to remove completely. Apparently, you can't have two antivirus programs on your computer, which is too bad, because no program is perfect, so having two might catch more problems.

I started using Avira's free program and then got the paid Premium version. The important thing is to keep whatever program you have up to date. Look for reviews on antivirus programs before you settle on one.

If you go to Norton site, they have a special program to remove Norton products completely. Do a search on *** Removal where *** is your product name.

As someone that repairs computer ills, I love the free AV products. Thanks to the 'free', there is always butter on my bread.
In order of appearance for repairs;
Expired Norton - because it came pre-installed with a 90 day trial 14 months ago...
AVG free
Windows Security Essential

The free AVs are like saran wrap for your windshield...stops the skeeters and gnats but the June bugs come right on through.

My understanding is two antivirus programs is not a problem **IF** you only run one at a time.

They are both just bloatwear, I am using NOD32 by ESET. It works by looking for the trouble, not just looking at a list of names!
No more slow computer after getting rid of Norton, and I have turned off JAVA
And used www.GRC.com shields up to check out my UPnP exposure

I just got my computer back from repair at Staples. It had the Java virus. They told me don't touch those free ones under any circumstances. They just can't keep up with the hackers dirty little minds fast enough. They suggested Norton as the best so that's what we did. It checks repeatedly all day long. So far so good!

I consider myself a very experienced PC user and use two products to protect my PC from malware. The first is Microsoft Security Essentials and the second is Malwarebytes. Both products are free although the Malwarebytes paid version ($25 for life) works automatically behind the scenes. I have always stayed away from both McAfee and especially Norton/Symantic because they tend to be very intrusive and virtually impossible to remove once installed. Unless you go to some really bad places on the web and/or download some really flaky software you can get by with what I recommended.
