Amen, Brother. Life is too short to be mean to other people, just because you think you can.

I would like to have a few dozen film slides scanned to digital. I don’t need high quality drum scans. I’m expecting to mail my slides to the service. Would appreciate recommendations from anyone who’s recently used one of these services. Thanks.

I have used ScanCafe with great results for around 1000 slides and 1000 negatives. They use a proprietary system for black and white, which works really well. I pay a little more for higher resolution images, and wait for their sales...sometimes you can get 40% off.

A screengrab gives you the screen, nothing more. if you need high resolution you have to display the image at high resolution. If the high resolution image exceeds the size of the screen a screengrab will give you a partial image. If you scroll the screen around you can get screengrabs of different parts of the image and combine them in Photoshop (or other software).

Some browsers will take a high resolution image and reduce it to fit the screen. If your browser does that it will change the cursor to a circle with a + inside. Clicking on the image will give you the full resolution, larger than the screen. But on a browser, a right-click will sometimes enable you to download the high resolution image. Some browsers enable the web page to overlay the displayed image with a blank image such that it doesn't show on the screen but you get the blank image when you download it. The screengrab is immune to that sort of protection.

Dirt Farmer-

Do you (or anyone else) know how to do a high resolution screen grab or screen capture on a Windows computer? I always get a low quality image when I do it.

(I am only talking about copying open source images.)

THANKS

It sounds to me as if you are looking for a sharing site rather than a storage site. I have never used imgur but I use flickr and it's pretty easy for someone to download an image.

First of all, if you (or someone else) can display an image on a monitor you (or someone else) can grab a copy of it no matter what program is displaying it.

Here's a photo from flickr.

https://static.uglyhedgehog.com/upload/2023/5/4/t1-665583-flickr_2023_05_04_18.24.32.jpg

The red arrow points to the download function. Clicking on that will bring up a dialog allowing you to choose the size of the downloaded file. Selecting a size will bring up a download dialog which will allow you to navigate to the folder you want the image sent to. Using Win10 for this example, but it's similar on a Mac.

If your image is not in flickr, displaying it on your monitor will allow you to download it by a screengrab. Most browsers support some sort of screen grab software that allows you to make a copy of the image being displayed on the screen and store the copy somewhere in your computer. Details will depend on the software used. Some programs can be used in the operating system and are not dependent on a browser. Google is your friend.

I have no obection to your using the above image for testing screen grab software. Or if you want to check out flickr, the image comes from https://www.flickr.com/photos/photofarmer/48790332702/

Hey guys - I am currently using several external hard drives for my backups. I have lost data before so I am very paranoid about making sure I have several backups of my photos both on my desktop and stored in a fireproof safe. I'm now looking for a good cloud backup vendor. I have about 3TB worth of data and as we travel, that's getting larger. What do you guys use? Looking for something not very complicated that I can backup to and restore if needed and quick / easy access.

I have tried several and finally settled in with iDrive, which has been an excellent solution for me. Simple, and easy to understand. Fast responses to my technical questions. It stays out of your way and delivers a simple message to your desktop every morning about what was backed up overnight. When I am away from my computer, I can quickly see my backup on my phone and download any files I might need on the go. And they will back up your phone if you want them to.

Bill-

Based on your recommedations, I have been looking for a HX-99 for months. They are not in stock anywhere. Used ones on Ebay are two or three hundred dollars more than a new camera.

Any ideas?

THANKS

I use the Sony HX99, has a 24-720 mm Zeiss lens, can shoot RAW, pop up viewfinder for outdoors, pop up flash for auto fill flash, easy to use, just set it to automatic and the camera takes over for you and does everything well.
You will not be disappointed, I never have.

ScanCafe has done thousands for me, and their work is better than any other service I have used. Get on their mailing list and wait for a discount. Once or twice a year they do a deep discount. I have always gone with the option to pay a little extra for higher resolution.

Thank you very much, Skip. I used Ps but forget which version. For color, I photographed various things around my neighborhood. One neighbor had red brick walls, etc. I color sampled those photographs and then applied that color to the various parts of the photograph. It took a couple of days working slowly an hour or two each day. I used lots of layers and layer masks.

I have colorized a photograph or two. Here's one for example. http://malarz.com/services/pop/index.html It was my first attempt, done years ago.

I compared what I did to that which AI did. AI failed considerably.

Bob- Looks great. What did you use to colorize it? How long did it take?
