I don't understand using a zip software to update a firmware. I believe it is antivirus softwares who do that, if not the OS itself.

As for zipping & unpacking, I've been using 7-zip for more than 15 years. It's my main compression/extraction tool. No issues so far.

Have used WinRar & Winzip on and off (trial period), they are ok too.
Have not tried the other 2 so can't say anything about them.

I agree with Wallen. Open Source, works on a wide array of archive formats, portable or installable (right-click options when installed).

What camera are you updating firmware on
I use Nikon and don't remember having to unzip firmware when updating.

I am going to update firmware for my new Canon R7. Nikon is ok with zipped files (EX). Canon seems to require software to unzip update file. Response from Canon users state they cannot open zipped file by double clicking or right clicking.

I can unzip the firmware for Canon R7 with the built in tools in Windows 10. I just right click it and choose Extract All.

Good to know! I was unaware of the ability of Windows 10 to unzip files and had downloaded Winzip23 by Corel a few years ago. After the free trial period expired I started using a free Zip program but never uninstalled Winzip23. When I right clicked a zip file it did not bring up Extract All as an option but showed Winzip23 instead, which I simply ignored and used my other program. Based on what you stated I suspected a conflict so I just uninstalled Winzip23 and now Extract All is an option and works just fine. My free Zip program is still installed but causes no such problem. Of course, some programs are more intrusive then others.
Thanks!
BTW, the OP has a Mac.

I do have 7zip on my computer but I only need that to extract 7z and rar files. With zip files I use the Windows tool. I did install (and uninstalled) WinZip because I didn't know a freeware that can extract *.rar files.

You should not have to download zip software. Normally a right click on the file, pop up window and there should be something like extract zip or open zip

The file the camera uses and the file(s) of instructions were zipped by the manufacturer. It must be unzipped to extract and use those files.

I have WinZip because some of the sites I buy e-books from only delivered them as zipped files in the past.

Just in case any Windows user does not already know, not only can Windows 10 and 11 unzip files, they can also create a zipped file. Create a new folder with the name you want the zipped file to have but without the .zip in the name. Load all the files you wish into it. Right-click on it and select "Compress to ZIP file." A new file will be created with the name you selected for the folder plus the extension .zip will be added. --Richard

I don't know and I tried. I don't see the "compress to zip file" option.

Windows can unzip and compress files, but it doesn't work on the wide variety of archive formats 7-zip does. One of the first things I do on a new computer is to setup a PIN and install 7-zip.

OK, the quck menu one finds with a right-click can vary from installation to installation. However, the option to "Compress to ZIP file" is always available somewhere.

Try this one. Open the folder you wish to compress. Select all of the files. Go to the More menu "..." in the header of the File Explorer and you should find the ZIP option there. Depending upon how you have your file explorer configured the menu may be located in a different location. However, the ZIP option will be available in the File Explorer somewhere. --Richard
