If one wants a particular ƒ-stop and shutter speed, auto ISO will adjust the exposure as required (within its limits).

I myself never use Auto ISO. I just leave my camera set to the native ISO (100).
But I can adjust in low light conditions if desired.

Everyone does things differently.
(Now we'll get a bunch of replies stating why I should use Auto ISO...)

If you are only using ISO 100 you are missing many photographic opportunities.

I am hearing rumblings that Sony is working on a camera that uses an Android operating system, Windows???, IOS. On another post a question was asked will the unit have to boot? I imagine that cameras like Win-11 can go to sleep and start right back up without a boot. I can see the advantages of the camera being able to use third-party apps if the camera manufacturer allows it. Right now if you have an Apple phone or other you need to go to Apple to download it. Same Microsoft, and Google downloads Android apps. It will be interesting to see if the MFRs give the choice of operating systems to the consumer. For it is a nuisance to have Win-11 set up to emulate Android phone apps and I don't know if Apple will do the same. The ability to share files and use apps is very appealing. What do you think?

I am glad that you like this. I, however, think that Android is quite bad. I only use my cell phone minimally, in part, because android mostly sucks.

Have you considered an Olympus PenF or Lumix GX-9 micro 4/3 camera. These cameras equipped with a small prime lens or small zoom are light weight and well suited to casual and travel photography. Used copies are available on KEH and MPB.

Remember it is daylight on the moon. Start with standard daylight settings.

Indeed the "sunny 16 rule" is a good place to stat. The color temperature of moon light is about 4100K.

Indeed computer pen tablets can be useful.

I would rather stick pins in my eye that try to edit photos on a tablet.

Just purchased a Samsung S23 Ultra with a 200mp camera. The photos have wonderful color and this camera has settings that you can adjust the ISO and Aperture plus you can set the time exposure for night time shooting. All the settings and functions of a mirrorless/dslr camera with one thing that this phone does not have a Mirco SD card slot to transfer the photos to the card. Maybe in the future Samsung will put a Mirco SD card slot on the camera.

Let's not be silly.

1. My cheap Cheap Samsung phone has a microSD card slot.

2. Realize the your phone DOES NOT have 200MP. The laws of physics prevent a small sensor from having this number of pixels. Also how good can a lens be that is stuffed into a pocket.

3. Anyone can have more fake MPs by purchasing Topaz Gigapixel AI. I do not criticize this fine program that has legitimate uses.

My question is....."Why should I pour all that money into mirrorless when I can shoot in live view with any of my three Nikon DSLRs? Just this last week I had my D780 with and purposely took images using live view. At the same time have been doing some video testing with it as well.

gwilliams gives a good answer on why an EVF is very useful.

The best way to answer your question is to rent a mirrorless camera and test it out.

The camera should be suited to the task at hand -Different task different camera (yes, there is often more than 1 choice). Furthermore, it is possible to make great photographs with almost any camera.

Some of the things that I like about my Olympus cameras are:

1. Histogram in the EVF. Seeing picture before taking photo.
2. Articulated screen with touch focus
3. Easy circuit for shutter release cables (essential for macro rail operation)
4. Lightweight body and lenses.
5. Various computational modes like live composite, simulated ND filters etc.

Except for number 3. My Nikon has none of these features.

Make your own list.

Shooting a black subject on a black background is quite difficult. The "green zone" is not the place to go. Another op has given good advice on lighting. His suggestions are good.

Take the time to familiarize your self with the zone system ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zone_System). A Camera light meter will always place the average light in Zone V (middle gray). A spot reading off the cat is the place to start. Use EC to move the cat reading from Zone V to Zone III ( black with texture and 2 stops less exposure than middle gray). Proper lighting will provide the necessary hair lights to provide details.

ISO is your last worry-use what ever it takes. Lights or flashes may be necessary.

The op here with the gray and white cat and the black cat has an issue with dynamic range. Adjustment of the image contrast is necessary in post. Good use of the curves function in post is likely necessary.

Nice Photos.

Soldiers who fought in the War Between the States were generally young and skinny rather than old and fat. One of my ancestors was, however, over 50 when he rode with General Custer in this war.

I'm looking for a new photo edit tool. I had Corel but with new laptop now looking for something good but not a big learning curve. If anyone can give their 2 cents on something decent but simplistic

1. Don't forget the free software offered by your camera manufacturer. Nikon and Olympus Software is quite easy and suitable for many raw development tasks.

2. Corel Paintshop Pro is a rather good program but is more comparable to Photoshop than its is to Lightroom. The latest version does however contain a better RAW development tool.
