I have as SD card reader built into my computer. Yesterday, I took the card out of my camera, inserted it in the slot on the computer, and dowloaded the photos to my computer. As I was inserting the card back into the camera, somehow, I noticed that the card appeared to be separating into two halves. Sure enough, I checked it, and it was separating. I don't know when it started separating, but I was thinking, it would be a shame to go out on a photo shoot, take photos all day long, and find out the card was defective. Now, yes, I have dual card slots, and I can code the second card slot as backup, but, still, I will, every time I remove the card from my camera, give it a careful visual inspection before reinserting it into the camera.

My brother had that happen to an SD card, simply put a piece of scotch tape around it and kept on using it without any problems.

Unless it's improved in newer versions, it's a pain, where the typical process is creating a 'brush' that is the watermark that you 'paint' onto an image.

You might consider a PNG with a clear background that is the watermark. Then, you can add the PNG as a layer to your image and position and size to your liking.

This process is the brush approach: https://www.essential-photoshop-elements.com/watermark-brush.html

Google gives multiple results, just add your specific PSE version to the search: photoshop elements watermark

And to get the exact "watermark" I wanted, I signed my name on a blank piece of paper, scanned it in, saved it as a .png image and used it to make a brush.
It's been a few years ago, my handwriting has changed somewhat (blame arthritis) so time to make a new one!

I used to look at the "title" of the message first, before opening it.
Now I look for the small green square first, to make sure it is not an ad I'll be opening.
Not interested in ads, and now the ads look too much like the "regular" message listings.

Is it possible for you to rent the camera you're thinking of, together with the lens, a possibility?
Depending on the weather, a few days should give you ample time to check it out, and compare the images to what you can do with your current camere.

In favour of having two cards:
My brother and a friend often go out "shooting" for a day. They have the camera record all images to both cards.
At the end of the day, they each take out one card and trade them. So they now have all the photos they took themselves, as well as all the photos the other one took.
Later on, they get together and compare how each of them "processed" the photos and discuss the "how's and why's".
They learn a lot from each other and are having fun. Sounds to me like it's well worth having a second card slot.

Saw this on another site and thought it was interesting.
I miss thumbing through old magazine ads. When I was just getting into photography I remember thinking I could afford a Praktika SLR. Wound up with a more modern Miranda G for my first.
Feel free to add any others to this. Cheers!

Could be interesting.... except I can't read it. Print is too small; downloading and using Ctrl+ several times does enlarge it, but also makes the text very fuzzy.
Any chance of reposting as "store original" ?

I use my camera for stills only!

If I really want a video of something or other, I have a dedicated video camera for that.

I have many memory cards (I do not trust any digital storage alone). I keep them in a box, in labeled sleeves. Does anyone have another system? I was thinking about something in a large loose leaf notebook, but I do not know how I would set up the holders for the cards.

Loose leaf: Stop in a store where they sell "stuff" for coincollectors. They should have plastic "pages" with a number of pockets to store coins, including silver dollar sized. Take a memory card with you to make sure it fits.
You could put a paper label with the card, or put a label in the pocket beside the card.
Recipe cards are perfect for this: thin enough to not make the page thicker, stiff enough to easily slide into and out of a pocket. You'd just have to cut them to size yourself.

You can sell good stuff to Adorama, MBP, or KEH. I have found all good to work with.

As to the equipment, when we moved, I kept it all. Not that I really have that much: two (smallish) cameras and a handful of lenses. It all fits easily in a drawer in my dresser.
We had been thinking of moving from our 2-storey house to a smaller place, and with that thinking I started to scan all my photos and negatives. It's a huge job, and even though we have been in our new place 2 years now, I'm still not finished, but there is an end in sight!
I've had many of the photos of the grandkids printed and I've put them into albums, together with stories. The kids don't know about those; the plans are to give the albums to them when the youngest one leaves home.
Our oldest son, who is the executor for our wills, knows about this, and will give the albums to the grandkids.
For now, the photos (and other things) are on two external drives, each a copy of the other. One "lives" at our place near the computer, the other one with a grandson, about half an hour's drive away. Any updates I put on a thumb-drive as well as the external here at home. Next time we go visit our daughter-in-law and kids, the thumb-drive comes with me to update that external drive as well.
Oh, and once in a while I'll give that grandson a couple of dollars for "rent" for storing that drive.

It’s most curious that so many who scoff at the widespread shift to fully live view cameras will tend to point out that they haven’t yet seen any significant gains in image quality from live view systems as compared to SLRs. Is this ordinary short sightedness or is it an intentional classic straw man thing ? I haven’t yet heard of anyone adopting live view primarily for its image quality.

I've never compared image quality between live view and viewfinder image quality.
But a camera without a viewfinder is a no-go for me. Simply because when I first started to use a camera, I was allowed to borrow one of my Dad's (I was 12 yrs old at the time). He taught me how to hold and use it.
I was 21 when I finally bought my own camera - and used it exactly the same way Dad had taught me.
I find that feet apart a bit, elbows pushed against my side and pushing the camera against my face does help with holding it still.
Today's camera having an articulated live view is a bonus: The grandkids hate to have their pictures taken and would disappear as soon as brought out my camera and started to lift it to my face. That's when the camera gets to sit on a table, chair, my knee, or whatever stable surface is available, the screen gets positioned so that I can see the kids in it, and I've got the remote in my hand. Took some of my very best grandkid-pics that way!

Weddings are a great rip-off. As I told my wife as we were planning our daughter's wedding. " You know we're only renting the food".

However, the memories are forever. As long as you have memory.

No, I don't NEED all the photos I have taken of my boys, the photos my Dad took of my siblings and me, the photos that were handed down to me from my grandparents, aunts and uncles, the wedding photos of my parents, ourselves, our boys and some of my cousins. Just wish I had wedding photos of the grandparents...
The quality of some of them is so bad that they should really be thrown out.
However, all these photos together have given me many pleasant afternoons, looking at them and remembering.
And even more pleasant: Telling my grand-kids about their family members, going back four generations.
Who can tell their (grand)kids about Grandma's dog, who stole my cookie, and then show a picture of that dog? Or tell about the great-granduncle who ended up in the ditch complete with horse and buggy, and then point out that great-grand-uncle in a family photograph.
Yes, for all that I do need my photos and am glad I have them. As well, my boys are now discussing who is going to get what photos when my time to leave this earth has come. I'm beating them to the punchline: I am in the process of scanning all the photos I have, including the negatives I still have. When I'm finished, I'll put the lot on four separate external hard drives and each of the boys (the wife of the youngest one, since he passed away a few months ago) will get one of these external drives.
So, no, I do not NEED all these photos, but I'm sure glad I have them!
Call me a sentimental old lady if you like, I've been called worse. And name calling has never hurt me!

Since everyone's eyes are different, and the only two persons that can really judge what you can and cannot see properly now, are you and you ophthalmologist.
My suggestion is that you discuss the options and outcomes of the surgery with your ophthalmologist and together decide what lens inserts are best for you.
I did, had the cararacts of both my eyes removed and lenses implanted (about 4 weeks in between time) and have not regretted it for a moment. I still wear trifocals, reading and arms-length are corrected with the lenses, the distance part has no correction and I can drive, walk, whatever, without glasses.
Yes, if you optometrist or ophthalmologist suggests cataract surgery, go for it, after thoroughly discussing the options and the expected outcome of each option.

These posts remind me of something my Dad dealt with. I've mentioned before that he was a professional photographer.
He had taken some portraits for new clients. Beforehand, as he always did, Dad told the clients what he expected of them and the photo-taking session went very well.
Three of four days later, the prints were ready and Dad took them to the clients. Of the ten or so photos he had taken, he had selected the best six; six the number the client had contracted for.
When he got to their place, the clients were pleased with the print, then started haggling: Well, yes, very beautiful photos, we will certainly show them to our family and friends....
But, thinking about it, the price is a tad high, do you think you could give us a bit of a discount.
Dad was already not in his best mood, had a good half hour's bike ride behind him and needed another good half hour's bike ride to get home again. He told the couple, "No, we determined a fair price when we discussed the session before I took the photos, the price is firm"
The couple kept on about even a little discount, Dad suddenly had enough, told them they could have the photos for free, ripped them up into small pieces, threw half of the pieces on the table, the rest into his pocket (so there was no way they could "re-assemble" the photos, and walked out. Several days later, he got a note in the mail: Apologies! Could he please print the photos again. He did, on condition that they paid for the torn up set, as well as for reprints. They did!

BTW, thanks for this thread folks! It has brought back many memories dating back to 1960 and before. Some good, some bad, but still, my memories that I can talk about with my brother; he's 1 1/2 yrs younger than me, but has many of the same memories.

I m 83 years old and have been blessed with a wonderful family. For the past 50 years or more I have been taking photos of my family and numerous places and countries I have visited. The point is I have over 8000 printed copies placed in albums and in boxes plus copies of most of them in my Mac computer (I cloud). We are contemplating of moving and down sizing for a smaller home, I know that I can store photos in the Mac system and memory digital devises but what should I do with the prints, they are stored nicely in about 20 boxes, with memories that I can’t remember when was the last time we look at them. The uglyhedgehog members are blessed with many wise ideas maybe you can help me to have a suitable solution. Please stay well.

A similar issue came up here. I don't have 20 boxes with memories, but the albums I do have take up one shelf in the bookcase. One after noon when the boys and their wives were all visiting at the same time (I think it was my husband's birthday), one of the daughters-in-law expressed interest in getting the albums "later". The immediate response from the other three was "what about the photos of my husband?" Not wanting the afternoon to be spoiled I told them I would sort them out first....
Since then, I have been scanning all the negatives I still have, and all the photos in the albums.
They are on two external drives (duplicates of each other) - one lives on our bookshelf, the other one in my grandson's bedroom. When I add to the drive here at home, I also put the addition on a USB stick, take it to his place and add the contents of the USB stick to that drive.
When my time comes, my grandson knows to copy the drive he has to three more drives and simply give them to his uncles. That way all the boys will have all the pictures.
The albums themselves... I'm dividing the photos over four albums (easy to do, they are loose-leaf), and each of the boys will get one of these albums when I'm finished.
It seems to be the fairest way to do it, and I am enjoying looking at the photos of the last 55 years!

Lol. Of course. But also, some of these I want to eventually enter into the mobile photography awards contest. I can store them on the computer and then back to the phone for upload, but the obfuscation factor is that I want to do about three or four different things with each file, requiring a variety of work flow solutions.

I guess I'm also hoping for some well-meaning hogger will tell me an app that can get it all done on the phone.
