I have the answer to your prayers, it’s an AF-D lens, small lightweight and sharp as the proverbial pin due to its aspherical front element, af 28-70 3.5-4.5, exquisite little jewel fits nicely on the D610

I have 2 Nikkor 24-120 lenses. One of them was over $1,000 new and the other was in the $700 range. Both were new from B&H. That's not even close to dollar figures you are quoting. And neither one of my lenses has a fixed aperture. The one that is most expensive has an aperture range of f/4 to f/22.

I wouldn't even buy a new lens in the price ranges you are quoting, because I doubt that it would be any good.

Mister Big Money missed the boat as it went over his head, There are two versions, an f3.5-5.6 (older) not well reviewed but I like mine (worth maybe $200-300 dollars used) and the f4 (fixed) yes it does have a variable apeture f4-22, but it doesn't vary as focal length increases, sells for say ($350-500 used). I have both, I detect little difference in image quality between the two. Very Happy

Glad you paid top dollar for yours, mine are fine and bought well as used.

I believe he’s talking about the f4 version, the “red” VR is the f3.5-5.6, doesn’t have a good reputation but I’ve used one for years, Japan Made, and with 11x17 find nothing to complain about personally. Did move up to the new one, I’m certain it’s better, I doubt I’ll notice, except for the f4 aperture.

I’ve used the 24-120 I and II on my crop sensor cameras from day one, 36-180 seems to be my sweet spot On my D300S and I leave the 20-35 f2.8 on my D700. Great combo and great lens esp that 24-120 f4.

Definitely the d500, if size and weight matter, compared to the D850 it’s a lot smaller, I use mine with the 24-120 f4 gives me 36-180 field of view which is a sweet spot

I print 5x7 format usually, on 13x19 or 8.5x11 paper, cropping in LR, I always find that I can crop further than when I was actually taking the photo. Sometimes I’ll stay at 3x2 if it’s a wide angle shot or necessity demands it

Loaded replies everyone dissing on the exp compensating button, use mine all the time, especially with my mirrorless cameras to visualize the color and tone of my photographs, also for snow, sand etc. sure spot metering is another tool, used to do it in my film, medium and large format days, a lot of synchophants parade around behind the manual, spot, raw, tripod dance. It’s bs, if you need raw to save your images you’re incompetent, tripod with VR forget about it, spot metering with modern sensor tech? Waste your own time, not mine, also the whole manual thing, nope Aperture priority, exposure compensation, jpegs print 13x19 no problem

For indoor sports, the 24-120 f4 on a D500 gives you a 36-180, perfect! And it’ll be fast enough on the D500

Anybody still using one of these? And if you are, how’s the reliability? I’m considering a used one, and yes I’m aware of the newer cameras, it’s a budget thang
