Do you need the zoom range? Do you need a full-frame camera? Should you be considering bigger changes than just a lens?

My favorite "light lens" for my D610 (or ANY of my Nikons) is a Nikon 28-200mm G
(https://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/28200g.htm).
They are long since discontinued but can be found used because the word got out.

50mm or 35mm f1.8 lens.
It's old fashioned but a simple prime can be a great and useful tool. And both are much lighter then a zoom.

ecurb took the words right out of my mouth. Having only a single focal length makes you think about your image.

The 50 1.8 is small & light, but so is the AF S Nikkor 24-85 3.5 4.5G which will give you a reasonable portion of the 24-120 zoom flexibility. Had it for an outing yesterday, had forgotten how much I liked it.

You will probably find what you need with the Nikon AF-D type lenses. These lenses do not have VR and you set the aperture with a ring on the lens instead of a dial on the camera, also they use the motor in the camera for auto focus instead of a motor built into the lens. For those reasons the AF-D type lenses are smaller, lighter and less expensive than the AF-S G type lenses. While Nikon does still make some AF-D type lenses, many are now out of production, but you can find them online. I have purchased out of production lenses on line from KEH.com and the B&H used department. These are reputable companies and their condition ratings are spot on. There are other reputable companies that I have seen mentioned but since I haven’t used them I don’t want to suggest them. Hopefully members who have experience with those other companies will bring them up. I have also bought lenses on e-bay with out problems, but be aware of the seller ratings.

Thanks for mentioning the AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G. I too have that lens and it is sweet. I didn’t think about it when I made my response.

Quite right. The newer cell phone have made great strides.

My favorite in this focal length range is an old Nikon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D. Long discontinued, it is still popular. It even has a "macro" range for 1:2 magnification, excellent for flowers, butterflies. I find it more versatile, smaller, lighter (19 oz vs 34 oz), and a bit sharper than the 24-120.

The SP 24-135 is a great lens. I have a friend with one of these in a Canon mount and she gets great results. I have no experience with the 28-200.

24-85 3.5-4.5. I too find the 24-120 f4 heavy; that's my only complaint about it. Often I will put my miniscule 35-80 AF-D macro lens on my D750 as a walk-around because it is so tidy and no heavier than a prime 50.
