CAMETA CAMERA was a great source, sorry they are gone now.

B&H, ROBERT'S (in Indiana), SAMMY'S in LA. top three sources for equipment.

ALWAYS buy the US version/never Grey Market.
ALWAYS pay the Nikon price, it is worth it in the long run.

go to the NIKON WEB PAGE and they offer good deals on REFURBISHED (by NIKON) equipment that comes with a warranty from NIKON. Lenses, bodies, flashes. You save a little, they often have incentive sales, and it is direct from NIKON so there is no problem with repairs or warranty service. (I got a 28-200 from their reconditioned listing-needed a 'vacation' lens. TACK SHARP/WORKS PERFECTLY/WARRANTY...saved about $200 from list.)

I retired from Cameta Camera a few months before they closed up shop (I managed their used equipment division for about 17 years) - I feel that was a definite loss to the photo retail world but the owner wanted to retire, and try as he might, he wasn't able to find a suitable buyer to keep the business in operation. If you like dealing with Cameta - try out CameraLand in Bethpage, NY (https://cameralandny.com/) - long term Cameta senior associate Steve Sandick recently joined their team. He is a 100% honest guy and highly knowledgeable.

Is Abe's of Maine a trusted supplier? Prices are pretty good.

Check their reputation through reliable rating sites - then compare to reviews for known reliable businesses - you can trust B&H Photo, Adorama, Henry’s, Robert’s - and many others. If you are talking about new cameras and lenses you will find that all of the reputable dealers have the same pricing - those prices are set by the manufacturers - a business listing the same item at a lower price should raise a very big red flag.

For anyone who doesn’t already know, avoid camera “deals” on Etsy the same way you would with 42nd St. - the site has more obvious scams than the unclaimed fortune emails I receive routinely from Africa. It’s so bad (It makes Craigslist look like the BBB), that I can’t believe it’s still in business. Here are some examples (and each “seller” has only 1 item, nothing but an email address, and 0 sales, references, reviews or even an address).

Canon EF 300 mm f2.8L IS (in perfect condition complete with case) $800
Canon RP with EF 24-240 & EF 50 for $350
And best of all, Canon 5D MkIV with “complete photography package” which includes a 24-105L and a 16-35L for $889.99 (!)

How do they get away with continuing to post these obvious scams (or stolen/fake merchandise) and stay in business? I’ve come to expect scams on a daily basis, but these are so blatant, it got my attention.

The answer to this is very simple- if a deal looks too good to be true it’s almost certainly a scam. If you want to purchase used or new gear do so from reputable dealers. If you can’t afford the going rate for the gear you want, look for lower cost alternatives to stay within budget. Too many people think they can get unrealistically great deals on line so they fall prey to these scammers.

Sharing information regarding equipment others have taken to Hawaii, no matter what the original post said, offers a spectrum of experience and what works/doesn't work which could impact and influence the original poster to change their plan(s).

The more first hand information the better, no matter if what is suggested follows the exact question guideline or not.

He has never been to Hawaii, and the question actually 'speculates' on his plan to take the equipment he listed. He could be wrong....or misdirected as to what might be needed or be the most practical on the trip.

Good points - I saw the comment someone made about not sticking to the exact wording of the question. Mentioned in that regard was pieces of gear like a backup camera body, one of the items I suggested. My point in that regard was that someone going on a significant, and perhaps once in a lifetime trip, should not proceed on the assumption that their main camera will not fail them.

I looked at Image Resource and it looks like larryepage's suggestion of the Nikon 24-120mm f/4G ED VR AF-S may be your best option for a one lens trip. Although the 28-300 offers more range, it is not as sharp for all the aperture/focal lengths combinations. If you want a little extra range, add in a 1.4X teleconverter. Again, renting may be your other best option.

Just a technical point - I don’t believe the Nikon 1.4X teleconverter is compatible with the 24-120mm lens.

My wife and i will be going to Hawaii September 2021. We have never been. I own Nikon equipment. Since we are flying ( I don't want to check camera equipment). I will be taking just one camera Nikon D800. If you were going and was limited to one or two lens, what would you take..?

On a full frame body I would take something like a 24-120mm lens - traveling with just one versatile lens like that will mean less time deciding which lens to use and more time actually capturing images. As a safety precaution, I would also take a backup lens and body in case of equipment failure - but leave those in the hotel safe unless needed. Less is very often more.
I have the lens but don'[t know if it is "old" or "new". How do I tell which version it is? Serial number range?
There were actually 3 versions of the 24-120. The first was a “D” lens - so had a physical aperture ring. The second version was a “G” lens (so no physical aperture ring) and was variable aperture (f/3.5-5.6). The latest version (also a “G” lens) has a fixed maximum aperture of f/4 throughout the zoom range.

I can add some light here - before retiring I worked for some 17 years for a major camera retailer (I managed their used equipment division) - Anyway - we also were a major Nikon dealer and we sold many thousands of Nikon refurbs as well as new Nikon cameras. I was often asked by someone who had purchased a refurb if I could tell them the shutter count. It was very rare that the shutter count was anywhere near a thousand (which is for all practical purposes virtually nothing) - in fact I routinely found shutter counts of less than 100. One case I remember, the photo I shot with the camera in order to test the shutter count was the first actuation. So, your test at 400+ does not surprise me in the least.

If the service (photo printing) is not being used should they keep the labs open and keep paying people to sit around doing little or nothing? I feel that it’s more a reflection of the fact that more and more folks are choosing to display their work on line, while making physical prints to a very much lesser extent than was true in the past. A good many people who enjoy making physical prints also have options in terms of excellent printers that they can have at home.

Wow, just had an upsetting situation happen on Instagram. I made a comment on a non photography post on Instagram and someone must have gone to my page, or what ever you call it, and looked at my photos. They then went on to say that many of the photos were not mine! They even said they had seen one on Nat Geo and was not mine and I was not giving credit! I responded to this person saying they were certainly all mine and the response back was there is no watermark and why do others names show up? Then proceeded to ask if I worked for Nat Geo.... I can only assume the other names they referred to are the people I tagged who were on the trip with me and I do not use a watermark, as many on Instagram do not.

This just really upsets me to be accused of claiming someone else’s photo! I did once again reply that I guaranteed that 1,000% they are all my photos and I was honored they thought my photos were Nat Geo worthy....

I have no idea. Honestly. Boggles the mind.

It’s not that photos are “manipulated”, per se, although cropping is not frowned upon. What they want is “caption” info “embedded” with the image file in a certain format which is what Photoshop has. I really don’t know. Just what they tell me.

Seems to me that selective cropping can alter the information conveyed in, for example, a news photo. Back in the film days original negatives were kept on file and could always be referenced if journalistic integrity ever came into question. The question I always wondered about is situations in which a photojournalist might choose to crop in camera by, for example, changing focal lengths or angle of view to deliberately include (or exclude) elements of a scene to tell “the story” as he or she wished, even if that representation was actually misleading. Not sure how that is dealt with but I’ve never heard a good answer - maybe it’s just not answerable?

I've been using Apple's "Photos" app, after the "iPhoto" app was dropped, and have generally been happy with how it works for me. Mostly, I'm interested in some creative cropping and some slight enhancement of the image. For the most part, it does what I want it to do.

However, am I missing out by not using a "real" photo editing app such as Photoshop, Lightroom or some other such thing? That, and one of the members of a press photography group of which I am a member, made this comment: "Why is he not using Photoshop?" I'm not really interested in spending hours and hours tweaking this and that to perfect my images. Just something that might work… better.

Or, to put it differently, what would one of these other editing apps do for me that "Photos" can't?

So, I am looking for recommendations and for those that won't cost a bundle. I'm not looking to purchase something like "Final Cut Pro", but something that a non-professional who does not make his money from his photography could put to good use.

Thank you.

A member of your press photography group wants to know why you are not using photoshop? I find that odd - other than very minor tweaks such as adjustments to exposure I though photo manipulation was considered a no-no for photojournalists. Why would he (or she) need to work on an image is PS specifically when minor tweaks can easily be handled in most any program?

SORRY!!!!! MY MISTAKE....he had a hugh stock of second hand cameras,etc.. was my primary place to shop for years and years, much better than the place down the block.. wonder what he did with all his unsold secondhand stuff.......I bot all my new stuff, mostly by mail to save the sale tax (no longer possible), but I would buy smaller items and lenses second hand there and traded in (up) more than one camera there....... Ed

I know - I ran the used equipment department at Cameta for a decade and a half - decided to retire also as the business wound down.

Just a point of clarification- Cameta camera did not go “belly up”. The business was owned by one man and he decided that he wanted to retire. He made multiple attempts to sell the business as a going (and highly successful) concern but was unable to do so - and, therefore he closed up shop.

You can absolutely trust KEH - they are an industry leader in the used gear market. Their cosmetic ratings tend to be very conservative- so you can expect to find the condition at or above how they rated.
