I recently attended a presentation by Rad Drew on smartphone photography and post-processing. I was astounded at his images, and even more by the processing he was doing in his phone. You can check out his website at raddrewphotography.com to see what I mean.

The biggest problem I have had with my family photos from the 1800s is that they were not all documented.

One thing you can do with IrfanView is add text overlays on the image. Take your mouse and draw a box on the image. Press Ctrl-T and a dialog will appear that allows you to write some text. You can adjust the font style and size and color and use a colored or transparent background. When you get an estimate of what you want you can press "Preview" and it will show you what the overlay will look like. If you don't like it you can change the parameters or move the box and try again. When you hit "OK" the text is overlaid onto the image. It isn't permanent until you save the image. Ctrl-S allows you to save it with a different name if you want or even in a different format or to a different location.

If you are only placing the photos in some form of publication you can add the text outside the image, but if you want any of the images to be standalone documents then some added text could be useful.

Rather than obstructing a portion of the picture with your text overlay, I would "Resize the Canvas" in Photoshop Elements to add white space at the bottom of the image and place the text there. I'm sure the same can be done in many software products.

My understanding from reviewing several sources is that if you buy from a dealer in another country, and if you have a receipt to prove it, then the camera is not considered gray market. Nikon USA will repair the camera for a fee, but since you did not buy their warranty (which inflates the prices here), they will not do warranty repair on it if it breaks. You have to send it back to the country where you bought it.

This is my understanding as well, but with the clarification that you need to be able to show that you were physically there, i.e., mail order doesn't qualify for this exception.

I connect wireless from my laptop to the router, but have an Ethernet cable connecting the router to the printer. This eliminated the frequent connection problems I used to have.

There are no monthly/annual fees for the Amazon Prime card, so you are just LYING out of your arse!

Also, your credit score does NOT drop because you turned down an offer of a pre-approved card, once again you have proven that you are just LYING out of your arse!

A pre-approved credit card offer will not impact your credit score.
The initial screening that lenders use to select pre-approved individuals does not impact your credit score. In fact, your credit score will not be impacted until you decide to apply for the card.

Those bastards sent me one of those cards.....UNSOLICITED!!! They wanted only a monthly fee of $13.12 A MONTH!!! That's 157.44 a year. I gave those SOBs both barrels and sent it back. Wouldn't you know that my credit score went from 815 to 780?

Don't know what you got, but it wasn't the Amazon Store Card. There are no fees for that.

I'm surprised that's there are so many different kinds of tiny batteries. You'd think it would to (almost) everyone's advantage to have just a few standard sizes. #2025 and 2032 are very popular dime-size batteries, but when you get to the really small ones, there are too many sizes.

I took out a Bulova Caravelle I hadn't worn in a while yesterday, and the battery was dead. Prying the back off wasn't hard, but reading the battery number was very difficult. The battery is about 5mm in diameter, and the battery description is "Sony SR626SW." That's a lot to write in a small space, so I had to use a powerful magnifying glass. The rest of the world calls that battery a #377, but Sony has to use it's own numbering system.

Not only is the battery small, but the mechanism inside the watch case is also small - about 12mm in diameter - while the body of the watch is around 40mm. I could have bought the Sony battery for $10, but I ordered ten Energizers for $5.72.

Ditch the magnifying glass and use your cell phone. Taking a picture and zooming in is easier, less prone to misreading, and can be saved so you can reorder next time without re-checking.

If you buy it in a state tax state, you must pay the sales tax, regardless to where it is shipped. If you BUY it in a tax free state- no sales tax. Regardless to where it is shipped. Whbat counts is the oplace where the item is bought. So if its a signifigant $ item wait till you get back to NH before you buy the item.AS the sales gtax in NY City is 8 3/4 % a 4 or 5 grand purchace you are lookinjg at a tax of 400+ bucks.

Then Amazon owes me a lot of refunds, because they base it on the recipient's location, not mine.

When you buy from say Amazon they charge you tax. I wonder how they calculate the tax, unless my mail address? How else can they tell where you live?

It's not where you live, it's where the purchase is delivered. I live in Delaware, with no sales tax. But if I have the package delivered to my dad in Idaho, Amazon charges me the Idaho sales tax.

It you're worried, just stick it in a baggie before tossing it in your computer bag. You don't need to find any special cover.

Usually true, but not always. Check the manual to see what the upper limit is on supportable RAM.
