Thanks... this has been the most helpful answer so far.
I'm most curious as to why the newer one is more expensive but seemingly significantly less sharp in the tests.

To be clear, I am not interested in the 50mm f/1:1.8 model or any other 50mm lenses.
I am specifically interested in the 50m f/1.4 either the version D or G - trying to understand the difference between these two models.

The principal difference between the D version and the newer G version (other than optics about which I have no view) is that the older D version still has an arperture ring and the newer G version does not have one.

The VR version is longer, heavier and uses larger size filter. Do you really need VR in the 24-70 range?

We are doing a similar trip in September this year. I'm curious as to your itinerary?

I am interested in renting a camera and lens or lenses to capture stills and video. I am very interested in any advice and recommendations yoered under your homeowners policy or an all risk rider can be added u can share regarding what camera and lens I should rent. Also where I can rent this equipment. My skill level is slightly above novice.

Thanks

I recently rented a camera and two lenses from borrowlenses.com for a trip to africa and all went seamlessly. Hint: don't buy their insurance. It is probably covered under your homeowners policy or an all risk rider can be added for much less.

Urban legends.

There is nothing wrong with Sony, I've been using them in my D850 for over 1 year without any issue.
https://www.delkindevices.com/xqd/ manufacturers the highest quality memory. I've started using 1 in the D850 without issue.

None of them are inexpensive.
Same here!!!

Make sure you have the most current firmware in your D500 to insure compatibility.

And, DO NOT PURCHASE FROM AMAZON. Counterfeit memory cards are all over the place. I only purchase from B&H, Adorama or Samys Camera.

Google Nikon auto focus fine tuning, that is where you find front or back focusing.

CMC, what a shame, sad to hear. Even though they're busy folks, incompetence should never be acceptable.(note, I didn't say -they- (whoever they are) were incompetent! We used to use B&H and usually the service was fine. We always pay extra if necessary to be sure we get UPS shipping (they tried to advise us FedEx was better; ha-ha-ho-ho, after decades in business, we've always received far better shipping service with UPS. After a couple of incidents, we switched to Adorama bit still insisted on UPS shipping. No one should ever put up with such screw-ups as you experienced. To be fair, in certain urban areas, it's possible that FedEx may give some customers better/faster delivery times, but they always practice 'driver discretion' which means they might just leave your expensive camera at the wrong address, instead of placing it in your hands, especially since you're supposed to sign for it.

It's a bit more difficult to do these days but it's still possible to reach B&H's executive level to place a formal (respecful/non-rant) complaint. In your case, you're fully justified to place a hold on your credit card for this B&H order, or for any vendor who can't get their stuff straight, or as we used to say, (that's a ton-o-my-money, sonny). As Billy Joel always says at the end of his concerts, (or used to), "don't take any $xxx from anyone." We've never had any issues with Adorama, coupled with UPS signature-mandatory shipping. FedEx left a next day iPad shipment sitting at the end of the drive, next to the street last year. Enough said. sv

Survival; I lost track of how many websites were devoted to FedEx rants/complaints; a lot. When people don't have problems with F/E, it's good to hear. We never ship via USPS and fired both F/Ex divisions after three shipments went badly. Two cartons were run through by fork lifts and the last never arrived. Since you mentioned stealing..when out F/E green delivery didn't show by 3PM, we called them. They checked the driver who said he'd left the delivery on the front porch. Fish story; we didn't have a front porch and no one had driven down our one-way drive that day. We called the authorities and luckily, the police weren't busy and they went to visit the driver. A plain-clothes officer spoke with the driver (with our stuff visible through the door) while a uniformed officer slipped around the back, then returned carrying our shipping carton with the shipping label intact. Busted:) The shipper didn't insure the item as requested, so they had to replace it at their cost.

DHL was always incredibly reliable; would give them all of our shipping business if they were still around. Always try to know your vendor or salesperson and read all of their policies; request written confirmation of your invoice and shipment details. Paying $5 for adult signature delivery beats not receiving your gear. Adorama always provided us with signature delivery unless we waived it for hub pickup. Track your shipment manually as often as possible and and request automatic updates, but not through third party companies. Even so, sometimes even the good guys goof. A year ago our regional UPS hub had a system meltdown in the middle of the night. For a full day nothing moved and people panicked. UPS made it worse when they sent generic email replies to customers which read, "due to an extreme weather event/natural disaster, delivery times may be affected." The weather at the hub was 75F, with no rain/snow/earthquakes, no black holes or no traffic accidents. Almost everyone has dealt with a computer failure, so if UPS had been honest it wouldn't have been what it became. Happy shooting and shipping. sv

First time on this topic area. Hope it's right. I recently got a new lens and have been trying it out. The lighting conditions weren't the best but I wanted to use it. I find that when I download and then look at the ''View Actual Size' option, none of them look very clear. In the past, I have used this function on Windows Photos, to help me determine how well focused the picture is.
The new lens is a Nikon 300-70mm. My old one was a Nikon 200- 50mm.

What auto focus settings are you using. It looks like the camera is focusing on something other than the bird. Try single point.

If you found fed ex tracking which said it was refused and took the time , you would find their customer service (make sure it is the fedex site and not a third party). There is an option for an on-line chat or email to start the search. Also, for expensive gear, B&H may have shipped it with a signature required for delivery. I would take a breath and call Fed Ex to see where it went.

I have bought many thousands of dollars at B&H and find their customer service to be amoung the best in the world.
