This fall my wife and I will be visiting Glacier NP, Yellowstone NP and Grand Teton NP, about 24 days all together. We are flying from Michigan to Montana and then renting a car.

I am interested in renting a camera and lens or lenses to capture stills and video. I am very interested in any advice and recommendations you can share regarding what camera and lens I should rent. Also where I can rent this equipment. My skill level is slightly above novice.

Thanks

In order to give advice on what might be most useful for you, we would need to know what type of camera(s) you are used to. Going on a nice vacation with a brand camera that you are completely unfamilear with sounds like a recipe for a disaster.

If I decide to do what you are contemplating, https://www.lensprotogo.com/ will most likely be my choice. Their prices and service are hard to beat. I will find a FedX facility near where I want to pick up and another for drop off. Less to fly with.

I recently rented a camera and two lenses from borrowlenses.com for a trip to africa and all went seamlessly. Hint: don't buy their insurance. It is probably covered under your homeowners policy or an all risk rider can be added for much less.

I own (but do not use) a Nikon N2020 with a Tamron 28-200 mm zoom. This was one of Nikons first auto-focus cameras. I don't use it because it is old and tired, and it is a film camera. Most photography now is using my iPhone Xs Max.

Thanks for the quick responses?

Where are you flying into/out of? Chances are you could rent right here.

You are looking at renting for a month. At that rate you would probably be better off buying used gear from KEH or MBP well in advance and give your self time to learn how to use it. If you aren't prepared to lean how to use the cameras features, you may as well stick with your phone camera. If you don't want to tie up too much money in gear, you can sell it on eBay when you get back and your out-of-pocket will probably be close to a wash with the cost of renting.

A month is probably an expensive period to rent? But remember - if using unfamiliar gear, rent something with a good IA (intelligent Auto) - perhaps Panasonic M43? Works on it's own button - switches on and off. Use your own settings, but when you switch on IA it takes over until you switch off - just take shots using both and you will not have to live with disaster. I have a feeling buying "used" could be cheaper than renting.

You may be very disappointed if you rent an expensive camera with lots of capability that you will never use and may have trouble figuring out. How about purchasing a decent-quality point-and-shoot camera with a built-in lens capable of telephoto shots (lots of wildlife in some of these places). That way you can learn to use it correctly, taking advantage of all of its capabilities. While it is nice to have good, expensive tools, that is not the whole basis of getting good photographs.

Well obviously with your current camera you are not shooting RAW. So that gives you some flexibility in what you rent. Never having rented a camera and len(s), I have no idea what the cost is, but I would bet it might be more of a wise decision to buy a good quality Bridge Camera and spend not that much more than you will renting, and own it for the long run. Can I suggest you look at a Nikon P900?? And it will serve you and your wife well, not only for your great trip, but in the future as you travel around Michigan. I have used mine along Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and the U.P. among other places.

In any case have a wonderful and safe trip.
