I now live where I have a Brook and lots of bird life. I was going to pick up the new Tamron 150-600mm G2. Then I saw a Canon 100-400, first version for a little more. Canon was used. I thought about a 1.4 extender. I have the Canon 5d II.

The 100-400 I had many, many, problems, especially image quality. I would not go anywhere near it, especially used, this lens was a vacuum for dust.
I know many, many, Canon shooters here in Florida, and they love the 100-400 II. It is a much better lens than the tamron, hands down.
It appears you have a budget. I know the 100-400 II would be a stretch for you, but I have seen this lens reduced many times during the year. In fact, it is currently on sale at $400.00 off.

In would like to hear from someone who has used both the Nikkor 200 micro and the Nikkor 70 - 180 micro. I would like to have them contrast and compared. Age what would make you choose one over the other.

Both are D lenses, so they will not work on the new Nikon Z series. Nikon no longer has parts to repair either one. BUT, a good camera repair shop may be able to help you out.
I have used the 200 extensively. Advantage is that you can shoot from a distance and not disturb what your shooting. You must keep in mind depth of field on both. The zoom advantage is that it is more versatile.
Being a PRIME nut, even though I have never used the 70-180, I would go with the 200 f4. It is a classic, and I love that older skin on this and other Nikon lenses of that era.

My wife and I will be retiring and moving to New Mexico soon.

Do any NM natives have any tips for getting a photo of a Road Runner?
Every time I have seen them, they appear, then are gone in a millisecond.
Hard to get a shot off.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Many museums out west have STUFFED road runners and they are set in a diorama that will look natural. Use a long lens to blur the background and correct for white balance.

I am attending a semi-annual luncheon of aviators from 50 years ago. I am the duty photographer and will be photographing the guys using a D7200. Which would be a better lens choice for candid shots, a Nikkor 55-300mm or an 18-200mm. I also have 35mm and 50mm prime lenses and an 18-105mm, all Nikkor.
Thanks, Dave

Use any of your 5 Nikon lenses. Stop them down 3 to 4 stops from wide open. Hold your camera steady, use a high enough shutter speed and the lowest ISO that you can. Better yet, make sure to use fill flash.
Remember, it is NOT THE LENS, IT'S THE PHOTOGRAPHER.
I have gotten beautiful 20X30 prints from the 18-200. So, use the proper techniques and you will be fine.

I work alone in a place late at night for my “day” job. The other night I was looking for something and came across a bunch of rolling cases. In one, nicely tucked away in their little cubby hole in the case was two Canon 5D Mark IIIs with big long zoom lenses. There is no security and no cameras in the building. And yes I was tempted, dammit. I’m sorry. I’m human. LOL But I didn’t take them ok. I also walked by three professional Sony video cameras on sturdy rolling tripods. I was salivating so bad. All I have is a Canon 5D Mark II. Don’t judge me!!

I was 17, went past a Oldsmobile Dealer on Sunday afternoon, there, alone, parked next to the garage was a brand new black, 442, leather two door, KEYS IN THE CAR, and, best of all, NO ONE AROUND.
Then, my thoughts went to my parents reaction, I reached into the car, removed the keys, locked the doors, and put the keys in the night drop box and walked home. With a big smile on my face thinking about what might have been.

I have a Nikon d7200 with an 18-135, a 50mm, & a 70-200 lenses. I have been thinking of buying a wide angle lens to take photos of a group 0f 10 t0 25 people. What lens would be good ? Either a nikon, tamron or tokina.
Thanks

The 18-135 at the wide end would be a field of view equivalent of 27 mm which, would be just about right for a group photo. Always try to do two rows, very close together, have a center person, everyone on the right and left of that person turns about 45 degrees toward the center person and group them tight. Have them is a little ark, that way they will all be about the same distance from your rounded lens element and there for all in focus. OH, shoot about 2 to 3 stops down to increase sharpness.

My brother has submitted photos to a local newspaper that are to be used along with an article he has written. He uses a Canon (?) and has saved them in jpeg. The editor has informed him that the photos are too large for their software to handle. My brother assumes he is talking about either dpi or number of pixels.
What advice should I give him in preparing his photos for publication in a newspaper? Should he be saving the photo in TIFF or PNG? Thank you

Your jpeg. is too large. There are tools you can make them smaller with, photoshop is very easy, and also JPG file size reduce software, this one is free to download and use.

Hi Guys,

I feel way out of my depth here, but need a little help.
My Coolpix P510, which has taken thousands of photos, mostly in Auto, has locked up on me.
It turns on to the 'Time/Date' menu and won't respond to any command.
Removing and reinstalling the battery has no effect.
Using a charged Nikon battery and one of the tried and true SD cards.

Granted, it's not a fancy camera, but it works for me, usually.

BTW, I teach painting to adults and use most of my photos as painting reference. Landscapes and flowers.

If your camera has the two button reset, try that. On my Nikon they are marked with green dots.

I just purchased a lightly used Sigma 17-50mm 1:2.8 EX DC OS HSM for Canon AF lens. I took it out of the box and it rattles! Is this normal?

NO, IT IS NOT NORMAL. But it is a Sigma. And, I have several older lenses that have been HEAVILY used and look LIGHTLY used. Lightly used could mean heavy use and you could not tell, it could also have been dropped on carpet, not scratches, BUT.

Hi, I recently purchased a D850 & 28-300mm. My dilemma is I don’t seem to be getting photos that are as sharp as I think they should be. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Just a little info, I have been Shooting pictures for over fifty years. Puzzled. Thanks in advance. Jeff

You have a Honda body and a Yugo lens. Get a Honda lens for your Honda Body.
I am not saying the 28-300 is not a good lens, it may be YOU that is the issue.
You SHOULD be able to get decent results from that combination. Make sure your TECHNIQUE is good. Mount on a tripod and check things out from 10 feet on a bottle of DAWN. Bring up the images on your computer and enlarge.
Many of my buddies have gotten good results with that combo. I smell USER error.

I'm considering buying a Canon 100-400mm f 4.5-5.6 L USM EF lens. There are lenses at attractive prices available on EBAY. There is an obvious risk here. Even if the seller is completely honest they could send you a lens that's one click away from failure and be completely unaware of its condition. Some sellers don't accept returns and you're stuck. On the other hand, many sellers of photographic equipment (especially lenses) have 100% positive ratings. This leads me to think that these seller are accurately describing their items. My question is has anyone played lens roulette on EBAY. If so, what kind of experience did you have, what is your opinion of the lenses available and what do you recommend?

Sellers can SAY whatever they want. If you use paypal you have 30 days to make sure you like it. Them are the rules.
I have bought and sold on ebay for over 10 years and have never been unable to solve a problem.

Many of my friends argue that cameras are becoming obsolete. I don't agree, but I would like to know what arguments are best to convince them that cameras do a better job than phones.

I take 30 sec. to 1 minute exposures on a tripod. Try that with a phone.

While attending a few estate sales this weekend I came upon a Tamron lens for My Nikon D3300. It is a 28 to 200 mm 3.8 to 5.6.
Can anyone give me an opinion as to the quality of this lens?
All replies will be appreciated.

1. Take out a bottle of Dawn, at least, this is what I use.
2. Set Dawn on sink.
3. Back up about 10-15 feet.
4. Adjust iso on your camera to make sure camera is shooting at least 1/250 sec.
5. Shoot Dawn bottle at 200 mm.
6. Load image into computer.
7. Enlarge image on your computer all the way and then, JUDGE FOR YOURSELF.
8. Yes grasshopper, it is that easy.
