I'd like recommendation for a good, reasonably priced 50mm 1.8 lens for a Nikon D7100 camera.

Thanks,
Sandy

There are lots of fine, used Nikkors available - inexpensively - on eBay. Get an f/1.4 and add an extra half f-stop.

Sandy, I'd only recommend Nikkor optics for your D7100. As already recommended, go for the f/1.4.

If one buys the older AF-D version, it will work on this camera but may not autofocus if and when the OP goes mirrorless. (I have that version and find it to be outstanding.)

The OP said nothing about mirrorless. Additionally, I'm not about to guess the OP's future intentions.

"a good, reasonably priced 50mm 1.8 lens for a Nikon D7100"
Sandy in my experience your wisest option would be the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens
(which is an effective 50mm on a DX crop such as the D7100)

Currently $166 new albeit you can find it used in very good condition for $100

btw, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Lens suggest above is NOT reasonable priced at $407...
I have this lens and it works reasonably well on a full frame but not so much on a DX body...

There are older Full Frame versions of the 50mm but you would likely be far better served to stay with a DX lens instead... my choice is the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens... it is pretty much the best DX optic in this focal length range...

I shoot with both of the aforementioned lens on a D7100 and the results are stellar...

Even good old uncle Ken recommends it.... lol

Hope this helps Sandy...
All the best on your journey

Correct, but they might want to be aware of future limitations. Most people upgrade their cameras eventually. (Personally, I'm not going for incremental upgrades in retirement. I'd rather spend my money on travel. For me, anything that would woo me would likely be mirrorless and perhaps not even Nikon.)

What are you planning on using it for?

If you're going to be hand holding the camera a lot take a look at the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens. All of Tamron's new SP (super performance) prime lenses have vibration compensation. They also have a metal lens barrel and are fully weather sealed. I have one that I use on my D750. The vibration compensation really helps.

Tamron made this a 45mm focal length because they say a focal length between 43mm and 45mm on a full frame camera gives the same perspective as what the human eye sees.

The lowest f stop I can get with my 28-280 Nikkor is 3.5 and I want to do some macro with flowers, etc.
