I now live where I have a Brook and lots of bird life. I was going to pick up the new Tamron 150-600mm G2. Then I saw a Canon 100-400, first version for a little more. Canon was used. I thought about a 1.4 extender. I have the Canon 5d II.

Your 5dII will not retain autofocus on the extended 100-400L as this EOS body does not autofocus at a lens / combo at f/8. Both versions of the 100-400L are excellent lenses where the top third-party models have caught up / passed the image quality of the older version of the 100-400.

I got the Tamron 150-600 G2 (Sony mount) a couple of months ago and am happy with it.

The Mark II is not able to auto focus that combo and you would be better off with the Tamron in the first place, as that is as far as I understand a pretty decent lens (at least the G2). I think you will get better image quality from that lens, as the Canon 100-400 is just a so-so lens, it really does not impress (I had one and got rid of it, it was just disappointing).

I use it the 100-400 II with the 1.4 extender on the 5DIII and autofocus on f/8 works fine. Did they change something in the 5DIII to make that happen?

I understand that and my question was to those that have the III, to understand how they changed the camera to make it work. The person that mentioned this(whose name I can' see in edit mode) is usually up to date on Canon gear.

Are your ready for the larger size/weight (over the Canon) of the Tamron ?? As mentioned, no AF with the extender on your body.

The 100-400 I had many, many, problems, especially image quality. I would not go anywhere near it, especially used, this lens was a vacuum for dust.
I know many, many, Canon shooters here in Florida, and they love the 100-400 II. It is a much better lens than the tamron, hands down.
It appears you have a budget. I know the 100-400 II would be a stretch for you, but I have seen this lens reduced many times during the year. In fact, it is currently on sale at $400.00 off.

I own a 150-600 G2. Got it a few months ago and am very pleased with it. I can't advise on the 100-400 other than to say it won't auto-focus with an extender on the 5DII.

Well said, as a Nikon user who had only bought Nikon lenses until a couple of years ago. I am amazed at the quality of the SIGMA ART and Tamron G2 lenses. I now own 3 of them.

The G2 is at least as sharp, and may be little sharper than the original 100-400.
