SORRY I did mean photoshop, not PSE. It is now the additional editor, with the PSE choice still there.

It's possible the LR software detected PSE, and automatically created the external editor definition. However, the full PS installation did not 'trigger' this editor definition. You can do it manually from Edit / Preferences / External Editing.

You might benefit from chatting with Adobe and asking how to 'swap' the PSE definition to PS.

The 'choose' option for the additional editor would let you navigate to the PS 'exe' and manually define PS. Just do the 16-bit ProPhoto for a PSD, TIFF, etc.

Thanks. I attached the window for preferences for external editing. I was able to add Photoshop Elements, which now appears in the Lr Edit-in menu. Thanks again everyone for all of the help and the advice on sharpening/noise reduction.

Thanks for the responses. It is Lr Classic v9.1 and Ps v21.0.2 on MacBookPro mid 2014, Os 10.14.3.

In Lr, from the "Photo" menu, under "Edit In", the choices are
- Adobe Photoshop Elements (uninstalled now) or
- Other App.

If I select other, I get a dialog box that I will attach. There does not seem to be any way to enter Photoshop. The Adobe rep in the chat did not know how to do it.

Background on my mission to replace Aperture: see: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-626241-2.html

I am getting better at Lightroom, but ran into issues trying to edit images using Photoshop, both the latest versions.

From Aperture, I would use "Edit in External Editor" and it would open Photoshop Elements 14, where i could do edits not possible in Aperture, then save to bring the updated image back into Aperture.

With all of the hype about Lr and Ps working well together, I expected this process to be even easier now. But no. Lr and Ps don't even seem to recognize each other. Lr offers no "Edit in Ps" selection and Ps says my Lightroom Library is empty. I just had a chat with Adobe, who worked me through the following process:
1. Launch Ps
2. Find the picture you want to edit, (which is in a folder recognized by Lr)
3. Edit in Ps
4. Save
5. Open Lr
6. Find the picture you edited
I did that, but could see no change until i did the following:
7. Synchronized the folder
8. Imported the Ps-edited image to Light room. It showed up as a new image.

Adobe said that is how it is now designed to work. Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated.

Also, sharpening in Lr, even at full sliders, seems weak compared to Aperture, where you can easily over-sharpen. Is Ps any stronger at sharpening?

While working in LR on the ~10K pix and movie clips from our voyage to Antarctica, i noticed a strange white appendage with "fingers" behind the mouth and under the eye patch of this Type B1 "Pack Ice" Orca. Any idea what it is? Also attached is a stock photo showing all of the Southern Orca Types.

Thanks for the NatGeo info- I was looking at them also, I think these type of passengers maybe more serious and committed to such a trip vs the very large boats like Princess and Holland. Ponant has a smaller ship too. I want to make sure that whichever cruise we use will include a lot of on-shore time on the actual Antarctic Peninsula, not just nearby islands.

You are welcome. The Nat Geo Explorer is small, ~150 guests + 100 crew, but comfortable at sea with roll stabilizers. It is ice-qualified and maneuverable with bow thrusters to visit tight places. At one site, they just nosed it into the beach while elsewhere, they entered a fast-ice field so we could walk on it.

The places they visit are determined on the fly, as a function of what other ships are doing, sighting reports, and especially weather. In our case, we began with a visit to Point Wild, Elephant Island, a Shackleton campsite, then we landed at Devil Is. and went as far south as possible into the Weddell sea until the way was blocked by the enormous iceberg A68A, which had famously broken off a couple years ago.

Then we headed back North West and visited numerous sites, including a Zodiac landing at Necko Harbor of the mainland and a sunset cruise through the narrow and beautiful Lemaire channel, until we ran into ice again at about 65° 07.7’ Latitude.

Inexpensive 20L dry bag from WalMart that we used is pictured here.

Hi all- best wishes to you on your Antarctica trip. We are planning for such a trip for 2021 and I'd like to ask about peoples' experiences with the different cruise lines or tours there. It seems many depart from Ushuia (sp?) at the end of South America and then ship across Drake Passage. Any suggestions or observations on the various companies would be really appreciated! Thanks- stay safe.

We were extremely pleased with the Lindblad/Nat Geo trip on the Nat Geo Explorer in December. We experienced great service and they really cater to photography, from seeking out interesting and rare wildlife to experts and even a B&H photo locker with equipment to loan.

Here is a submission to our local small town newspaper:
"Tony Jagodnik (Bolton) with son Andy (Ohio) visit Port Lockroy, established by the British in 1944 as Base A to secretly monitor German shipping during WWII. The site was recently restored as a museum and the only functional Post Office in Antarctica. It is surrounded by a colony of Gentoo penguins. In the background is the National Geographic Explorer, which [disembarked from Ushuaia then] brought our MIT Alumni group and others through the Beagle channel, past Cape Horn, and through the Drake Passage on this amazing Journey to Antarctica. We sailed for almost 2500 miles, reaching as far South as 65° 07.7’ Latitude (ice limited), had great summer weather, and saw many species of birds, seals, penguins…even a few emperors usually only found further south.. and whales, including rare Type D Orcas. We walked with the penguins and joined them in the water in Zodiacs or Kayaks."

I have just switched from Aperture to Lightroom Classic and am learning it by working on the 10,650 pictures we took with 3 cameras.

I am going to Antarctica next month, and I was wondering how to keep my cameras dry in a zodiac, especially if a rogue wave comes aboard. Lowepro sell expensive dryzone backpacks, and other people have used a crumpler satchel bag. i would like easy access to at least one camera, but it may be difficult if I put them in a drysac.
I am planning to take both my cameras ashore with me: Nikon Z7 with 28-300 mm lens, and Nikon D750 with 24-70 mm lens.
I would be grateful for your thoughts and suggestions.

Thank you

We were just there on the Nat Geo Explorer in December. As many have noted, they don't run the Zodiacs if the water or wind are too severe, limiting splash danger to high-speed runs or crossing wakes. We never got wet at all. I used a Peak Design 10L sling bag, which is water resistant and big enough to hold my new D7500, a Tamron 18-400 which hardly ever came off the camera, a Nikon 50mm, and Nikon 16-85. My son had the same bag with my backup D5300 and Tamron 16-300. These bags are great for flying as they are small enough to count as a personal item...neither check-in nor carry-on. We also had waterproof roll-top bags that each hold one Peak Design 10L sling bag, but weren't really needed in our case. I also had my new Samsung S10+ phone as further backup and for wide shots. On Kayaks, i took only the phone.

Many people had DSLRs, but no one attempted to change lenses on board a Zodiac, so i think your plan of taking two bodies is wise. However, when zoomed widest, the Z7 with 28-300 covers all but 4mm of the D750 with 24-70, so if you only take one camera on the Zodiac, it would likely be the Z7.

With multiple cameras, if you do post in time order, it is important that they are all set to the same time, usually local time. If you have GPS, don't set the camera to get time from it because, where available, it may unexpectedly shift you into a different time zone. I am struggling with getting 10,600 images from 3 cameras in sync.

It is summer there, so plenty of light and almost no night. Have a great voyage!

I simply love Affinity, had it for a year now. I believe you can still get a free time limited trial - thats how I started and never looked back. The Workbook is worth buying, but there are a multitude of help videos available for Affinity on line.
I have other post processing software but only use Affinity now.....

Can you use Affinity instead of PhotoShop as a pixel-level editor well-integrated with LR Classic?

FWIW - IF the price is going up from 9.99 to 14.99, and you can get it at 9.99, it most likely will be for a full year as it is an annual contract billed monthly.

I joined in 2014 and the price has been 9.99 per month since I started.

Thanks again. I did get it for $9.99/month for a year, plus sales tax.

I also found a way to trim videos: https://havecamerawilltravel.com/lightroom/trim-video-files/

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this and previous related threads! I have been working on a comparison spreadsheet, attached for your review and comment. Your comments, feedback from the developers, and the reviews (comparisons with LR) in Photography Life are reflected. I decided to go with LR Classic, which comes closest to matching what Aperture could do and has many exciting additional capabilities. Now I need to buy a year before the price goes up.

I just ended a chat with Adobe, who confirmed that

1. There is no "List" view as in the Aperture Browser.
2. When publishing to Flickr, you can only put images into the photostream, while Aperture lets you put them in any existing Flickr album or create a new one.
3. LR accepts .mov files, but there is no way to edit them in any way. Aperture allows you to trim movies, often all that is needed.

Nor are there any plug-ins or anything in development, but there might be 3rd-party solutions (e.g. as suggested by Dngallagher ..BTW, thanks for that!)

During the chat, it appeared that the price will be going up from $9.99 to $14.29/month, but i could still get it at $9.99...but for how long?

New Question: Do any other alternatives to LR, like
- Luminar 4
- DXO Photolab
- Alien Skin Exposure
- Capture One
- Blue Marine
- ON1 Photo Raw
- Photoscape X
- Raw Therapee,
have decent DAM capability and can handle these functions?

Aperture is still working on my iMac. Too bad it was abandoned. When it dies I will look to something else.

Yep. Aperture 3.6 works on my mid-2014 15" MacBookPro (OS 10.14.3) except for an occasional crash it and does not accept .nef files from D7500. When I get a new 16" MacBook pro, I plan to keep that laptop, and not upgrade its OS, just to run Aperture on the tens of thousands of images I have accumulated, if necessary.

Abandoning Aperture is one of the most disruptive things Apple has done, IMHO. They also let go of Airport/Time Capsule and many laptop hardware features that were once discriminators, e.g.:
- Battery check (row of tiny LEDs)
- Oscillating sleep indicator
- Mag Safe Power connector with charge indicator
- SD card slot
- Illuminated Apple behind screen
- Expansion

But the 'before' seems to ignore rotation and cropping.
