You have to sit and take some shots a couple days a week just to keep the birds used to you and the flash, not mention keeping yourself in sync. You hope for a unique visitor or something different. Some days you get a couple and then some days KABAM. Today there were several cardinal juvenile hanging around acting like juvenile do. Their feathers have come in and no mom and dad.
I have just received a 1.4 to go on the 100-400 and it does change thing a bit. The distance from this feeder is short so the DOF is pretty thin, but it sure does make some great boken.

I have heard good things about the better beamers. It seems like a good idea. I used hot shoe flashes and wasn't unhappy but when the I got 360's started using them. I had 2 granddaughters get married at about the same time and needed something stronger as well as portable. One of those any excuse to upgrade. The 400s were pure GAS.

Hi, I received my 1.4 extender today and needed to check it out. So far I really like it. I thought little birds would be a good test.
But to the point. These are straight OOC. You can lighten shadows in post but it can be a huge pain to make it look right. Using a flash it is pretty fast and easy. The new cameras have really good TTL. I use it mostly due to the need for quick changes. I used to use a regular hot shoe flash off camera. I have steped up and mainly use a Godox (Flash Point) AD 360 or occasionally an AD400 if I need/want some kind of extra softening. Any way thoughts/comments or a better way are welcome. As always "all contributions are greatfully excepted."

Hi, One thing I have seen recommended is flash. I use it on almost every image. Sometimes as the main light source but mostly to fill shadows. Then too I like back light quite a bit. After just a few times most birds pay little attention to it. I sit in prearranges spots where I have feeders out for the most part and birds are creatures of habit. After a few times they don't pay much attention. Some are more nervous than others, usually the bigger birds.

Love the shots, and it is amazing the things you learn here at UHH.

I like a little bit of silk in a waterfall. It doesn't have to be all silk but a little. The major thing is you have blowout in the second. How much silk or individual drops is a matter of taste so up to the person. You may want to be your own judge on that but mind the blow out.

For me, the choice is quite simple:

If I want to see what's going on around me while I'm looking through the viewfinder, I keep the other eye open. For example, if there's action going on and I need to know what's about enter into the camera's field of view.

If I don't care what's outside the field of view, then I generally keep the eye shut so that I can better concentrate on what's in the viewfinder.

Yep, me too.

Don't get wrong, I think both are good cameras. I like a FF camera though for a few personal reasons. You can use the 6D for action but the 7D is better suited. I have a 6D1 and have been in the field with a buddy who uses a 7d2. Yep, he gets more shots than I do, and yes I do have to crop more than he does. But the rendition is different (colors). You could do what I did though, I ended up getting 5D4 during a sale. Great camera!

Not nearly as old as you not exactly young. One of the things I love to do is little backyard birds. I have some feeders set out in a few places. One is outside of a window. I put some branches out leaning on supports of various kinds. When things require I can stay just in the house, open the window, set up the tripod, pull up my chair and have a wonderful time. But I do admit running around the yard filling feeders gets me some needed exercise.
