Take a look at the Godox TT685S I just started using this model on my Nikon D7100. Really good results. And, the instruction manual is good compared to most Chinese knockoffs. The price is right at $110...

Having control over your Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights in your image gives you more precise adjustment control. Here is a video from Jesus Ramirez Photoshop Training Channel that explains this in detail. I am a big fan of PTC because he is a Photoshop guru and his videos are easy to follow.

I'm a follower of Jesus Ramirez and found this video to be the best that I have found for developing luminosity masks solely in Ps. That said, I have been using Tony Kuyper's Luminosity Mask Panel add-on to Ps CC for developing luminosity masks since Version 4. I am currently using Version 6 of the panel and Tony has just released Version 7. Tony's panel is the best method by which to develop luminosity masks. Over the past several years he has improved the panel to the point where it is a push-button process for unlimited luminosity mask development. And, it is cheap compared to the time one would spend using Ps by itself to do the same thing. And, I just noticed on Tony's website that he is offering Version 6 free to those who have not tried his panel. Just go to http://goodlight.us/panels-and-videos.html and take a look. Believe me, you'll never look back after using Tony's panel and Sean Bagshaw's video tutorials.

Instead, get another SB 700. I use two, both off camera and triggered by the popup flash on my D7200.

I had to buy the Godox XPro transmitter and the accompanying receiver in order to use my SB-700 off camera. The optical trigger (using the built-in flash) just didn't cut it. Totally unreliable. Radio triggering is the only way to go.

I have used an SB700 for 4 years. I just bought a Godox TT685N, GN 197 ft. Just started testing it and already love it. $110 and includes built-in transceiver for off camera use which I do a lot of. Significantly more power and less$$.

Should work well as long as your hand is in the same light as your subject.

You are pretty much correct. For birds in flight you should be around 1/2000 shutter speed. If you are in auto- ISO that shutter speed will drive the ISO pretty high. High f/stops will do the same thing. My preference is to set all three manually. Welcome to MANUAL, you won't be disappointed.

You might try The Great Courses online. They have a number of them. The introductory course by Nat Geo photographer Joel Sartore is a great start.

They are not accredited but are very high quality.

I bought Sartore's course on sale from Great Courses 5 years ago when I got my first dslr. I just took it one cd at a time. He has a step by step process that worked for me. It was well worth whatever the cost was.

I own 2 d7100s and think you'll be disappointed with the d5600. If you want to save a bunch of money, go for a used or refurbished d7100. Check nikonusa.com for refurb and KEH for used...

The last time I bought a complete set of Epson ink cartridges for my Epson XP-830 printer it set me back $100. $100!!! Comparateandsave.com offers compatible ink cartridges for this printer for only a little more than half that price. Has anyone had experience buying ink jets from this business and, if so, how do they work? Does anyone have a suggestion on another place to buy ink jets?

I know nothing about that company. However, I have bought lots of Canon and HP compatible inks from LD Products and have never had a problem and save about half...

I use the Adobe Creative Cloud as my post-processing toolset. I also own the DxO brand NIK toolset, which I use on occasion. Over the last year, I’ve tried to learn more about PS and how best to process my better shots using that tool. I feel there is a “richness” apparent in the result that I don’t see from LR. (That’s not a bash against LR! All my work starts and ends in LR) I believe it the result of endless adjustment options. So, I was processing images of a family gathering, and as you know, it’s difficult to throw many of those shots out. Plus, knowing everyone would want copies, I wanted them to look nice. I would be working all those images through PS, which was gonna take a while considering my LR workflow. But, I didn’t want to forsake the strengths of LR! On a whim, I hit the AUTO button on the first image and was impressed with the result. It was a wonderful starting point to take to PS, and it didn’t take long to get there. What’s more, the images I didn’t take through PS were “presentable”.

Has anyone else used the AUTO button?

I'm in your camp Bruce. Start in LR, hit the Auto button, fine tune that adjustment, move to PS and make further changes that can't be done in LR, then back to LR for printing...

I think you achieved your stated goals wonderfully, Frank. Here is a crop for your consideration. I feel the amount of negative space in the frame is a drawback as it's more difficult to see the textures and excellent lighting.

At first I wished for more space at the top also but this crop looks balanced to me. The light and line of the table grain lead us at a nice angle to the subject. I'm on the fence about the one little wick that is visible. Kind of quirky and fun

Nice crop Linda. Really brings out the details in the wood. As for the wick, it certainly defines what we are seeing in the image...

I have a couple of Sigma lenses and love both. A 10-20mm and a 24-70mm, my most used lens.

LD makes great ink. Used it for a couple of years on Canon printer. Colors are true. That said, I just bought a Pro-100 and will likely use Canon ink through the warranty period. Also, when my old Canon died I had 8-10 cartridges left in my stock. LD allowed me to return them for partial credit.

Is the hot shoe on the top a pass-thru, i.e. if I'm using the device to power an off camera flash, can I use the hot shoe on top to power something as if it were connected to the camera?

Thank you!

My guess is yes. Otherwise there would be no point in having that hot shoe.
I've been looking at that same transmitter and have found that some who use it with Nikon's SB700 have had compatibility problems. I've emailed Godox but who knows whether the reply will be in English. Most reviews are positive.

You want to go out and take nature pictures from a machine that generates an obscene noise level and is full of humans? Maybe Florida wildlife is all deaf by now.... Good luck.

My thoughts exactly. Are there any non-airboat tours down there? Would love to photograph from a slower moving, less noisy vessel.
