Candles

Here is a shot I was working on yesterday. I wanted to emphasize the texture of the wax and the grain in the wood. In addition to also emphasis the lighting of the candleholder. For those who would say to light the candles, I thought about that. But I decided that, at least for me it would take away from my final product. I am willing to guess there are more in the light the candles camp than not.

I like it without the candles lit. This is just me but I would prefer it not to be so close to the top and more to the left. I really like the textures of the woods and the lighting though.

Wonderful detail, Frank! Good work in the low light.

Point well taken. I always appreciated how you see things.

Mike let me start with hoping you are on the mend and will be up and about very soon. I did the lighting with a flash on the front end of the candleholder. As for the rest of the holder I used a lume cube and light painted it.
Thanks for stopping by.

I think you achieved your stated goals wonderfully, Frank. Here is a crop for your consideration. I feel the amount of negative space in the frame is a drawback as it's more difficult to see the textures and excellent lighting.

At first I wished for more space at the top also but this crop looks balanced to me. The light and line of the table grain lead us at a nice angle to the subject. I'm on the fence about the one little wick that is visible. Kind of quirky and fun

I think I am spending way too much time in FYC, I am starting to think about the same things as others have mentioned. That darn wick, , but I decided to leave it in since they are candles.
You mentioned the table. I used it for the very reason you stated. It Is an old oak table and has a lot of character.
BTW I do like your crop.

Linda’s crop is the one to go for in my book Frank. It’s a nice warm image, so it’s OK to leave the candles unlit although, being candles, they do ask to be lit. I particularly like the colours, from the oak table, the candle holder and the candles themselves. I’d want to make more of that were it mine - I reckon the grain and colours could stand out more with some careful pp. Another super concept from you Frank.

Nice photo, Frank. I agree about the positioning suggestion, and I would not light the candles.

Thanks for your detailed analysis on my shot. I think I have to agree with Linda’s crop suggestion. When I set up the shot, my idea was to use the table to lead the eye to the candleholder. I did tweet the colors a bit. But I did not want to go over board.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I am a bit surprised that so far unlight candles are getting the thump up.

I cropped it even more than did Linda, keeping the wick on the thirds line but cropping some of the front bottom of the holder. Details of the candle and wood stand out in the resulting bold, still life.
