To all you "gotta have the latest" folks...I run a mid 2011 iMac with High Sierra. It does everything I need to do perfectly. Photo wise I run Affinity and Aperture. They all work fine. I do not see any need to"downgrade" to the latest problems. They do not offer anything new that I care to have. I also have a Windows XP system with Photoshop CS2 that still runs admirably well. I don't go on-line with it so security is not an issue. I also drive a 25 year old car that works well. I also use a flip-phone. I am never distracted in public or driving. Am I old? Yes and enjoying every minute.

Yesterday I watched Apple's latest presentation on its new iPhones. I'm interested in the opinions of our UHH contributors of the camera system (still and video) of these new iPhone 11's.

I have an iPhone 8 Plus, and while the camera system is OK for what it is, I would be lost without my DSLR's. For me, their creative potential will never be surpassed by these new cell phone cameras. And my DSLR's will capture video, too.

BUT, will these cell phone cameras eat away at the population who would potentially use DSLR's?

OR, are these new phone cameras a good back-up system to carry around?

So many questions!!!

If you haven't watched the newest Apple presentation, the link is below.

I am an Apple user (2 iMac's and iPad) I do not have any use for a smart phone, social media or especially selfies. When I am out, I use a an LG flip phone for calls only, and I have either my Nikon P7800 or my Sony A6000 with me.

I am unable to send photos using Photoshop Elements 12. I haven't been using this program for several years for this purpose but have been using Picasa instead. Whenever I attempt to send a photo using PSE12, I get the following message: "Your e-mail could not be sent because your e-mail address was not recognized or is invalid. Use Edit > Preferences to enter a different e-mail address in the E-mail settings."

I know the email addresses I am using are correct so maybe they aren't being recognized for some reason. I purchased PSE12 several years ago and don't pay any fees to use it. Maybe that's the problem, who knows!!! I would gladly start paying if that is the reason for my difficulty. I could always go back to using Picasa but I'd like to solve this problem and start using PSE12 again! Any comments or suggestions would be most welcome.

I use View NXi. It resizes and flawlessly opens email program(Thunderbird in my case) and attaches photo/s. If you are on a Mac, Photos does the same...opens Apple Mail, shows image size there and lets you resize.

I can not save Raw photos onto my iMac in photos from my Sony A6400. They load and then I can not save.

I have not had this problem with Nikon or my old Canon.

What do I need to do? I will be installing Lightroom shortly, however I like Mac Photos for ease of sharing.

I have the same system. Photos will not work. I use Affinity Photo and it works perfectly. New software is cheaper than a new computer.

Mike,

While I have not taken the train to Silverton, I have driven the road that follows the river and the train takes the same route. Awesome views. I think the train has the better route, be prepared for the wow factor. The base height on Main St Silverton is around 11,000 ft above sea level, and the mountains go up from there. There was another Hog member that posted photos from Main St.

Attached is a scanned (faded) Ektachrome slide I took in the Spring of 1960.
2nd photo was taken in Bethesda, MD ...same time frame.

Try to frame the Jefferson Memorial between branches of cherry blossoms. You can do this from many vantage points. Crowds won't matter much for this shot. What will matter is depth of field. I tried multiple focus shots and combined them in the computer.

Time machine backs up everything. You can retrieve anything. I once restored an individual e-mail that I deleted.

Nobody? Nikon still does! The F6 and the FM10

Digital is convenient and its image quality is excellent. I know of a retired wedding photographer that was using Hasselblad cameras and Zeiss lenses for his job and one day I was admiring a beautiful 20x30 image of a bride with excellent resolution and no grain that he had in his studio. When I told him that the quality of a Hasselblad with Zeiss lenses were simply awesome he laughed at me and he told me that the image came from a digital Canon and it was not a professional camera. After that I began to believe more in digital photography.
I like to shoot film but today it is not as convenient like it was in the past. For sure I do not feel like going back to the optical darkroom again. Monochrome images have been my passion and I feel I can do better with conversions than what I used to do in the past and by the way, I can do it better than I did in the darkroom.
I see one big advantage with medium and large format and it is the resolution of even small details that in my humble opinion is superior to digital.
There must be a reason why nobody today makes a film camera.

Years ago I had a Canon S70. It came with Canon software called Zoombrowser. It imported photos into a "year_mo_day" folder. I the appended a name to the date describing the contents. I liked that format for storing the photos. I then went to Nikon and started using Nikon Transfer 2. I configured it to store the photos in the same format. I have a multi-card reader installed in the computer that I built ( I use CF, MSPro and SD cars in my cameras). When I insert the card I select Nikon Transfer. After I transfer the photos, it opens View NXi so I can review photos before PP.

Until recently I had a Nikon D70. I copied images to my computer with Windows Explorer, which worked well for me.

Now I have a D300 and have had problems trying to copy image files. So I downloaded Nikon Transfer thinking it might work better.

From reading about it, I have a question. Will it copy to my hard disk leaving the original file on the CF card? Or does it "transfer" files so that the file is removed from the card?

Thanks for your help!

I signed into my Adobe account and in "other downloads" I can still find it there along with the full creative suite and acrobat 7....the keys are there also.

As they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I'm using CS6, and I'll keep using that till it doesn't work any longer. It's a good sign that CS2 still works.

As for free, that's debatable. People have followed the steps to download it, but were never able to actually get the program, myself included. I mailed my copy of CS2 to a member here, but it never arrived, and the post office wasn't able to locate it.

Please don't criticize me. I am using CS2 on a fast quad core PC that I built(Win 7 pro, Quad 3.4 I5,SSD, 16 gb ram)
I am amazed how well this old software performs. It accepts the latest plugins (Nik collection, PTLens). I know it doesn't handle RAW, but I have other software that does, convert to TIFF, then use CS2.
Before you try to get me to upgrade...I also use Elements 2018, 2013 and GIMP on my PC, Aperture , Affinity and GIMP on my MAC.
Anyone else using this old workhorse???? By the way it is now free.

In case one does not know, you can download GIMP for Windows, MacOS or Linux.

I have run it on Mac and Windows.

GIMP is about the best linux-native PP program. It's similar to PS in its abilities, but has a very different UI. You'll need to pair it with a raw processor such as UFRaw. There's another one out there people seem to like as well or better, but I don't remember its name. UFRaw is not intuitive to use.

DarkTable is a good image organizer. Like LR, it has some image processing abilities, but isn't as full-featured as LR.

If you're wedded to Adobe, you can run Windoze-native programs using Wine. However, don't expect peak performance. Wine is essentially an interpreter that translates the Windoze program at run-time. This means you're doing two processor-intensive tasks at once: graphics processing and interpreting the Windoze executable.

As an aside, for those of you running Macs who want to play with Linux/Unix, the Mac OS has been for some years just a Unix shell. You can drop below the hood and run Unix directly without much trouble.

I know you say wireless is important. My DSLR's have IR sensors for remote, but they are on the front of camera which is useless to me. I don't take photos with myself in them!!! I only use wired remotes for my activities.

Good Morning Folks...
Been searching Amazon for a remote shutter release for my D500,(Nikon). Nikon branded equipment is so costly, and after market stuff really cheap by comparison.
Does anyone have experience with any of these after market products? Ya know, Fathers Day is coming up and questions are being asked.
I appreciate any information offered.

Thanks, Frank

Contest???? If it doesn't have a viewfinder, I will not buy it. I do not have a smartphone( and probably never will).
I tried cameras without a viewfinder..what a waste in bright sunlight.
