Pulling Photoshop CS5 from the Time Machine?

I am setting up a new iMac desktop, beginning today. I've been told by an Apple salesman that, since I've had a Time Machine external HD connected to my old computer, I can reload the CS5 from my Time Machine HD.

Have any of you experienced this process? And if so, how successful was it for you?

And thanks for your input.

Time Machine has been running for years, but I've never had to use it.

I think the standard procedure for transferring most Adobe programs is to "deauthorize," or whatever they call it. Then you install it on the new machine. Adobe would be the place to get a definitive answer. Or Google.

First, verify that CS5 apps will run on your new operating system. There’s no reason to migrate it if it’s not supported.

Elliott, why would you even want to run that version?

ABC, I want to run it because it actually works, and all of my PS upgrades have been paid for, by me. And when I say "run" I mean it does all the intricate work I desire.

The Apple salesman simply said that it would be easy. Yea, I know, those famous last words. But in the course of the rest of the day, I'm going to attempt to achieve that. And I was hoping one of you guys will have done this.

I'll still keep my fingers crossed that someone who HAS will yet log on and see my request. And I also thank you guys so far for the links, for once I have the desk top computer, I'll get back on UHH and begin trying those links.

Thanks for the answer. I can assure you that not only do the current versions work just fine, they are far superior to CS5 which I used many years ago due to the new features. They do indeed simplify and improve the whole process. I never heard of anyone who had the current products go back.

I thought the Time Machine was for data only. Does it have the programs too?

Keep us posted on how it works out.

An answer and a comment. To answer your question, yes, Time Machine stores data files and software. Years ago, when I did have a hard drive go back, after the Apple guys replaced the HD, they reinstalled all the software from my Time Machine.

My comment: PS CC ?????? I'm told, our university has an agreement with Microsoft and Adobe, in which our students and faculty are entitled to obtain copies of both companies' software, at no cost to us. However, after reading all the headaches here on UHH, I won't consider it. After an "update", I always read on here where users can no longer do certain things, and/or find they must take significant amounts of time to "repair" what was done on their computer from the PSCC """update""". That is something I prefer to not get involved with.

BTW, about Microsoft? I use Word for my teaching tasks. And....I just spent $149.99 to purchase my own software from Microsoft.

Elliot,

Somewhere on my computer I've go links to Adobe's servers where there are fresh installation files for old software. If it comes to that, you could delete/uninstall CS5 from you new computer and do a fresh installation. I'll look for it if you need it.

"However, after reading all the headaches here on UHH, I won't consider it."

Forums are like a microscope that draws out people that can't make their computers work.

Adobe, according to business journals, has somewhere over 10 million subscribers to their CC program. Some guess about half are on the cheap $10/month Photography plan.

So if you can find 100 UHH members having headache trouble with Photoshop, that would be around 0.002% of the customer base.

Bsprague, Thank you for your offer. I may take you up on that offer. On Monday, a former student of mine, and an IT person himself (but in the PC world) is going to spend the afternoon at our home, with the first project to install Thunderbird on this computer. This e-mail client is a must. After that, one by one, we are going to cause print installers to be downloaded to this computer, and for my Wacom tablet (keeping my fingers crossed there) and eventually PS CS5. At that point, on Monday afternoon, I'll learn if CS5 can be loaded from my disc, or perhaps even the Time Machine left from my prior iMac. Thank you again.

Isn't the Time Machine an imaging backup? Can you individually restore applications?

On Monday, when my former student....and now an IT graduate, come to the house, we'll find out. His actual mission for me is to download and install Thurnderbird. After that, we will then start installing (hopefully) other things, like PSCS5, my Wacom tablet, Affinity, two printers, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree.

I don't know how it works on a Mac. You can download CS5 from Adobe, but do you have the serial number?

Yes, I do. I've retained all CDs of the software I've purchased, complete with the serial numbers and key codes if that is what they used. I think you may just have made my CS5 install much easier than anticipated. I thank you therwol.
