I am interested in the wooden film holders and the 8x10. Just off the top of my head, how about $20 and I'll pay the shipping?

Just a note on the length of your slideshow. I did a video a couple of years ago for my sister. A consultant was hired to help with the finer points. One thing she said that has stuck with me is, you have about four minutes for your presentation, after that, your audience gets bored and loses interest. I agree with the four-second duration is way to long.

I tried to use the LR slide show function and found it totally lacking in a lot of areas. I use Apple's Final Cut ProX, pricey but works for me. If you are using Windows, you might try Movie Maker, or if an Apple fan, try their app (name escapes me at the moment).
Lots of luck with your project,
Mike

As an experiment I just tried a program called PxbimColorSuprise Ai. It colorizes B&W photos. I tried the free version (it doesn't have all the controls of the paid one) on some old photos and the results were... 25% amazing, you would think that the photo was taken in color, another 25% acceptable not great, but if you wanted to have a color picture of Grandpa then this would be OK... 25% somewhat OK, probably staying with the original B&W would be better and the final 25% trash the colorization did not work.

In at least 50% of the photos it exposed detail that was not obvious in the B&W photo which entirely surprised me.

In my experiment, all of my B&W photos were old, many going back to the 1940's and earlier, I would assume that better quality B&W photos would have better results.

I really don't know how many old photos I would like to colorize, but there are a few that if they were colorized would make a considerable difference.

My questions are, has anyone tried colorizing software? If so what software? Did that software get better results than PxbimColorSuprise Ai.?

I'm currently using Codijy Pro. To see some excellent examples of what can be done check out their website. It's not an automatic process, you have to decide what colors and where to place them. It can be a real challenge. I also use photoshop to kind of fine-tune things. As mentioned in your post, the final image depends on the quality of the underlying image and the interpretaion of the user.

On Monday I do in for a hip replacement. It is being performed by OrthoArizona and one of their top rated surgeons. Have any of you UHH members had this done recently, and if so what was your experience?

My wife had her left hip done via the frontal method. Rehab consisted of not sitting around the house. She spent one night in the hospital and was walking around the same day she was released. Two days later she was driving. Her rehab consisted of doing exercises at home. Needless to say, recovery time was amazingly short.

I am looking for a macro copy stand and or a quality light source for copying up to 4 x 5 glass plate negatives with a dslr.

I "built" mine using advanced engineering techniques and locally sourced exotic materials (slamed it together from stuff I had laying around). Lets get down to the nitty-gritty. I hot glued a small box together using some foam white foam core board I had, found something to use as a diffuser, in this case an old white plastic table cover (less then 2$ at dollar general). A piece of glass from an old picture frame to lay my negs on. The diffuser was about 2+ inches below the glass. For a light source I had three inter-connected LED puck lights that I put in the bottom, about 3-4 inches below my diffuser. I used my DSLR on a tripod aboue my box. It was inexpensive and worked adequatly for my needs. I copied my negs emulsion side down, RAW format and played with exposure. I know there will be those that have a problem with my solution, but it worked.

This was shot by Russell Lee, Pie Town, New Mexico in 1940 as part of the Farm Security Administration's photo project. The original image was/is a 35mm B&W shot on nitrate film. The image was downloaded from the Library of Congress. The colorization is of course dependent on the underlying image and the colors are subject to the interpretation of the individual doing the colorizing, in this case, me. enjoy

I've tried to use Photoshop to color B&W photos, but haven't had much luck with it. Piximperfect on youtube has a great tutorial on how to do it. I haven't tried it for a photo like yours, but I imagine it can be quite involved. May I suggest "Codijy"? you can find all the info at Codijy.com along with a lot of great examples and tutorials, plus you can download it for a trial run. I'm still learning, but it works great, support is superb and there is a great community out there on Facebook more than willing to help out.

I made an interesting discovery last month. I had just purchased a new iPhone and a case that would hold a credit card and a few other minor things. I liked it for that reason and the part of the case protecting the front could be folded back and used as a stand for watching videos or whatever. It was held closed by a couple of small magnets. Perfect! Except the magnets affected the compass, level, and my star locater apps! They just stopped working! Changed out the case for a different one without magnets and everything is working just fine. Something to think about!

Geez... just get a proper film scanner. The software with those have built-in means of removing the orange mask from color neg film. The better scanning software (such as Silverfast) even gives you a preview that's accurate enough you can make further adjustments to exposure, contrast, color temp and tint before starting the actual scan.

Geez...Some of us can't afford a film scanner that will do 120 and larger negs, or afford to send them out to a professional scanning service! Yes its on the "cheap" but it works!

Interesting, and makes a lot of sense. For references, you might take a look at a series of videos called The Photographic Eye, he talks about technique, not gear. After over fifty years of imaging in one form or another, I have found his short talks to be inspiring.

This can be easily done in PS. It takes several shots to accomplish. I think you can find a YouTube video on how it’s done. Lotsa luck!

I started with PS 3 on a pc and did that for many years. I made the jump to Mac and don’t retreat it one but. For me it’s not so much the hardware as the OS. I use a three year old 13” MacBook Air with an ssd drive. Works for me. Just my take.
