On Monday I hope to post another "Thinking in Black & White" topic in For Your Consideration. The theme will be high contrast lighting, such as with shadows, silhouettes, graphic shapes.

Would love to have you join in and share your images in that thread. If you aren't already subscribed to FYC, here is the homepage:

Here are some I shot yesterday with that theme in mind. Over-exposed by 1 stop to make it easier to blow some of the highlights in pp (yes, on purpose lol, for artistic purposes), and because snow will photograph too dark when you let the camera make all the decisions :)

Thanks for your visit!

Regis has a Tamron not Sigma. I have one and as yet I'm not able to a photo as sharp as Regis.

I may be wrong but the reason I purchased my Sigma was based on the pictures Regis posted on this site of eagles. He replaced his with a different one about the same time I got mine. I am very happy with this lens though I have a lot to learn about photography. bud

Looking at purchasing a Sigma 150 to 500 mm lens used and was looking for feed back on other users as far as the quality of this lens I read all kinds of reviews but think the best reviews would be from actual users on this site.

I have had the 150-500 sigma for over a year and have had good results. It is heavy and I use a tripod when possible. I have made many hand held shots on bright days with good success. I don't think you can beat it for the money. Ask regis. he used one for a long time.

Go to https://www.usa.canon.com/ click on the "support" page and look for "manuals", then "7D Mark II"... it's available there to download for free (PDF file, so you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open and view it).

Thank you. lfinger sent a copy to me. Got it printed and am getting ready to start reading bud

Congratulations! Great camera. You'll love it!
Canon has a very handy AF guide for the MK II. Not sure where you can download it, but here is the file name:
EOS 7D Mark II AF Guide CUSA 9-2014
Learning the autofocus is the most challenging part of the Mk II. The guide is very handy. I can e-mail you a copy if you wish. Just PM me.
Have fun with your new camera!

Edit: BTW, for some reason that is a secured file. I have found that Adobe Acrobat Reader DC opens it with no problem.

I have had the 7d Mark ii for about six months and still don't understand the autofocus. Would you e-mail me a copy of the guide? Bud bcuffel@usa.net

Lens aberration due to high contrast.

You might consider asking the admin to move this to the photo analysis forum.

Ron, the overcast sky is bright and the eagles are so dark I have a hard time getting the correct exposer. The first picture I sent was a RAW converted to JPEG and I tried a lot of different things to see if I could help it and in the process made it worse I have sent another JPEG straight out of the camera that demonstrates the problem to MT. Please take a look bud

Now that's a FINE example of over-processing a heavily cropped image.

Thanks for reply MT. I should not have used that photo. I will send another that is straight out of the camera that is a JPEG. I had been screwing around with that trying to make it better and succeeded in making it worse.

I started to have a problem with my photos having an outline around the edges of them. I have tried different lens to no avail. I am starting to wonder if it is my moniter. However I put a picture on facebook and viewed it on another computer and it was still there. I am inclosing a picture that demonstrates the problem.

The light is not your friend in this situation. It is flat to the point of distraction.

Everything has a one dimensional appearance. That's one thing flat lighting can do for you. If that was your intent then you succeeded.

There is a lack of grace. The bird looks stiff as a board. I think I would have shouted "Boo!" in a very loud voice and caught him in a moment of action.

Sorry not to be more supportive. Now all that is needed is for a fellow Hogger to come to your rescue. There are some viewers who will take a liking to this photograph.

I will say that the colour is very nice and the whole thing is not over cooked. Tha's a plus.

I have viewed you list and I am happy to see you moving in on subject matter with this one.

Tha's progress.

Jim, Thank you for taking the time to critique my photo. I find that this is the best way to learn and different people have very different views of the same subject. I spent much of the morning reading about flat light and that might help in the future. bud

Awesome image. Not sure when taken but if you or any one else can be there today with this current storm I have no doubt you would see more of the same if not more high surf.

Dave, I live close to this site and go there often. This picture was taken 11-14-2015 during a major storm. My canon 7D and me both got wet on this trip but seemed to survive.
