The light is not your friend in this situation. It is flat to the point of distraction.

Everything has a one dimensional appearance. That's one thing flat lighting can do for you. If that was your intent then you succeeded.

There is a lack of grace. The bird looks stiff as a board. I think I would have shouted "Boo!" in a very loud voice and caught him in a moment of action.

Sorry not to be more supportive. Now all that is needed is for a fellow Hogger to come to your rescue. There are some viewers who will take a liking to this photograph.

I will say that the colour is very nice and the whole thing is not over cooked. Tha's a plus.

I have viewed you list and I am happy to see you moving in on subject matter with this one.

Tha's progress.

You got a clear shot of the subject, which is good. As an example of bird photography, it's okay but not impressive. The bird isn't doing anything interesting, and its surroundings are kind of icky.

Jim, Thank you for taking the time to critique my photo. I find that this is the best way to learn and different people have very different views of the same subject. I spent much of the morning reading about flat light and that might help in the future. bud

I agree what have been said but I will add that Im not seeing anything in focus. You have excellent equipment including the glass which is a very good one. Did you had IS off? Its truly soft all over, I can't find anything in focus.

With the overall lack of sharpness the bird tends to melt into the background. The birds pose/position are very static and uninteresting. I'm not sure why you selected an aperture of f13 for this shot but a wider aperture would have brought you closer to the sweet spot for your lens and allowed a higher shutter speed. Not sure why the lack of sharpness because it isn't because you missed focus by a little bit - nothing is sharp.
