I have a Nikon D 750 that originality came with a kit zoom lens. In taking some shots of distant targets, I note they are out of focus but this decreases as I zoom out. I am sure the autofocus tabs on both the camera body and lens are set correctly to AF. Querying the photo data for the shot indicates manual focus. This does not occur with my prime lens (50mm 1.4). Any thoughts?

I received this message today, from a user who just put me on their ignore list. I have never interacted with this person before in any way:

Point taken. I grabbed a quick, one-handed snapshot in a mirror for the purpose of creating an avatar, parodying the famous self portrait by a photographer I can't recall. It's not exactly a demonstration of photographic skills, but at least it covered most of my face. Here are two better shots, although they do reveal more of my old and ugly mug. Should I switch?

It’s your avatar.....don’t let some troll dictate and make you change it to meet his approval...I’m sure he wouldn’t be crazy about mine which was shot with an iPhone in my office......

Going to St. Louis for a ballgame and looking for photo ideas, primarily angles/positions to shoot the arch from (also: warehouses, churches, funky neighborhoods, etc).

ref: East St. Louis - this place has been known to be worse than Chicago and L.A. combined. And though I'd be just across the river -- with expensive camera gear -- how bad is it? I'd probably be over there at 1:00 am.

Thanks

(I really like old, beat-up, and funky)

Lots of great stuff in the Central West End; the areas around Euclid & McPherson. not necessarily the dining area but the gated side streets beyond with lots of huge old houses try https://cwescene.com/

Southern Pacific #844 was scheduled to pass through our little town and half the town was lined up beside the tracks. I went to a crossing a few miles away and waited. The train came into view. Now the big moment. I took a couple of shots as it was approaching. The train was really moving, making up time lost in the previous town. My Olympus c7070wz had a shutter delay and was also slow saving pictures. After my second approach shot it seemed to take an eternity to save the picture. I was sure I had missed the shot I really wanted. Finally the save finished and I hit the shutter button immediately. I was very lucky. It probably turned out better than if I taken it without being pressed. I cleaned up the shot (a person and part of a stop sign) in pp.

Just shooting aircraft from the roof of our co-op building in New York City for my new series "Traffic Along the Hudson" (NYC) and shot these two among others.
The jet has 4 engines, not many of these today, blue colors might suggest AirForceOne. Has anyone an idea what AF1 would look like from underneath?
2nd item might be a weather balloon ! ideas?

I think the first photo is an Airbus 380 and the colors suggest its either KLM or Korean Airlines.

We will be going to Quebec City for a few days prior to leaving on a cruise. While there, we plan on travel via city bus and taxi. What kind of currency will we need and what photo sites are not to be missed. Thanks in advance for any advice. Also, neither my or I speak French.

Definitely the old city and the areas around the Chateau Frontenac. The issue of speaking only French has been overplayed in the past. In restaurants, for example, if you come across a place where it seems no English is spoken, an English menu is usually available for the asking.

Have fun!

A few photos from the streamliner event

Your top photo (New Haven 2019)shows a very unique diesel-electric locomotive (EMD FL-9). They were solely used by the New Haven Railroad between Boston and New York City and, into Pennsylvania Station. To operate into Penn, they were outfitted with a "shoe" that could power the locomotive as the diesel could not be used in the tunnels. This presented a problem going into Grand Central because of multiple tracks and switches so some units were able to utilize an overhead cantenary with a small pantograph. These were heavily used...I was probably on this one at some point!

Nice set!

For the amount of events I've done I thought this was a simple answer. After all, figuring out photo problems is part of our job! Here's something I've never come across concerning an Ipad.

Besides all the other photos and pictures in a wedding, the client wants copies for use on their iPhone also. Mind you those will be only the ones that have been accepted, not everything, and also in "simple" jpeg form. My question to those here is, what is a method to get the photos on an Ipad?

Normally in that case, I would just put them on a memory card for them to transfer. Now I find out the Ipad doesn't have memory card slot, or maybe it does somewhere but I don't have time to find out as the wedding is to take place in a week. Afterwards I'll have time to do a direct transfer if that will work.

I have never touched an Ipad before so I'm open to your suggestions. How would I put images directly on an Ipad?

I think the simplest thing, assuming the photos are not to large, is to email them to him, after which he can save these to the photo section of the IPAD
