Southern Pacific #844 was scheduled to pass through our little town and half the town was lined up beside the tracks. I went to a crossing a few miles away and waited. The train came into view. Now the big moment. I took a couple of shots as it was approaching. The train was really moving, making up time lost in the previous town. My Olympus c7070wz had a shutter delay and was also slow saving pictures. After my second approach shot it seemed to take an eternity to save the picture. I was sure I had missed the shot I really wanted. Finally the save finished and I hit the shutter button immediately. I was very lucky. It probably turned out better than if I taken it without being pressed. I cleaned up the shot (a person and part of a stop sign) in pp.

Nice photo! What is the purpose of those metal shields on the sides of the engine?

AKA Elephant Ears. They are "smoke deflectors". At road speed they will tend to cause the smoke to rise up and over the cab helping the crew breathe (and see).

Thanks for asking. I’ve always wondered that, myself. You learn something every day.

Good shot: however, this is the 844 AKA 8444, a Union Pacific Northern, not Espee (Southern Pacific). Just a slight name change. However, I still wish SP was still around. They had a real assortment of power. RFB

I got photos of the 844 about 10yrs ago when it did a tour. It was parked in the Roseville UP yard. Took grandson that day. Chased it out of Sac. Got a screensaver shot while in a gully shooting up as it passed by heading home.
Looking forward to the 4049, Big Boy, to hit the road in 2019 for 150 Anniversary of the golden spike. Hope it makes a tour to Roseville UP yard.

The 844 is actually a United Pacific (UP) engine. Glad to see it's up and running again. I think it was being overhauled in the recent past. It used to come to Omaha frequently but not too often lately.

This picture was made on a 2007 tour. I don't know what the status is currently. I imagine if it's not currently running it will be later and will tour again. I hope it comes through Arkansas.

Thanks, jfdnp. Like I said, I got lucky. I will take credit for the composition with the Railroad Crossing sign in the picture. There was very little cropping to get the final picture. But still, I got lucky.
